Art Museum Museum
Admire the private collection of Nicholas and Dolly Goulandris at Goulandris Museum of Cycladic Art, housed inside a neoclassical mansion. The collection of Cycladic art (works from an ancient civilization that once existed on Aegean Islands) includes pottery, ceramics, art, sculpture, and jewelry. The one-of-a-kind galleries, once the private rooms of the Goulandris, are accessible throughout the year and a popular stop on a tour of Athens. • Only went here on our last day, which was a shame. The layout was very helpful and informative, especially the top floor on daily life in Greece.  more »
  • We visited this time to see the wonderful Francois Vase but also enjoyed the small Cy Twombly show. There is of course much much more to in rooms upstairs where the permanent collection resides  more »

  • This is such an amazing museum. It has a really good survey collection of all the major historical periods of Greek archaeology. A must see!
  • Excellent ! Full historic route. Good presentation. Need at least a full afternoon !
  • A great museum to visit. It has four floors. The first is dedicated to the simplicit enigmatic sculptures of the cycladic civilization, the second is about classical ancient greece, the third is about ancient cyprus, and the last a great presentation of the life of an ordinary athenian of the classical times. The museum has great artifacts and is presented in a non boring (suitable for all ages) way. Pairs nicly with the Benaki museum, the archaelogical site of Aristoteles lyceum and the byzantine museum.
  • The history of Greek and Cycladic art thrown into one museum. Shows the progression of sculpture from the simplest of forms and how they were made.
  • Beautiful museum. Nice cafe and fantastic souvenirs.

Where to stay in Athens

If you come to Athens for its ancient history, stay in Plaka, a lively neighborhood located within walking distance of the city's major archaeological sites. Although relatively expensive, hotels in this part of town offer spacious rooms, private swimming pools, and rooftop cocktail bars. For less expensive but equally comfortable lodgings, consider boutique hotels and family-run inns in the quiet residential neighborhoods just a short drive south of Plaka. Good rooms fill up early in the season, so plan ahead and book in advance.
