  • It is a Greek Orthodox church and one of the oldest churches in Athens. The church of Panaghia is built on the ruins of an ancient temple, dedicated to a female goddess, possibly Athena or Demeter. It...  more »
  • This quaint little church is located on the main shopping street, so it's impossible not to notice it. During the hours of greatest affolamento is closed. In the morning on Sundays during mass, you can enter and, without photos, Antioquia, Orthodox mass. The Interior is very well cared for, full of religious relics and frescoes.

  • For a thousand years people have been praying in here. Before that it was a temple dedicated to Goddess worship...it is a very blessed place, with a very beautiful and peaceful vibe once you settle down.
  • A beautiful, small and ancient church. Walk in, light a candle (anyone can do that) and sit in the hushed, dark space contemplating the Byzantine frescoes. A respite from the crowds and bustle of the central Athens.
  • The church is old, XII century but renovated at the beginning of XIX century with paintings. Thus better outside than inside
  • Just in the center of Ermou, the famous road in midtown Athens, a small square around this beautiful small church, a good place to have a rest with many coffee shops around, and watch the performance of street artists.
  • Nice little church. Free to go in!

Where to stay in Athens

If you come to Athens for its ancient history, stay in Plaka, a lively neighborhood located within walking distance of the city's major archaeological sites. Although relatively expensive, hotels in this part of town offer spacious rooms, private swimming pools, and rooftop cocktail bars. For less expensive but equally comfortable lodgings, consider boutique hotels and family-run inns in the quiet residential neighborhoods just a short drive south of Plaka. Good rooms fill up early in the season, so plan ahead and book in advance.
