  • The markets are the place to immerse yourself in the daily life of the people. Visit the monuments, squares, local famous but, be sure to visit the local markets, craft shops and unspecified glossy as most guides. Exits off the tourist circuit and let yourself be carried away by the flow of the locals, if only you love knowing their customs and traditions, so without influence. The Athens central market, whose entrance is under the magnificent wrought iron porches (1879), is notable for the fact that inside the covered structure divide the spaces only butchers and fishmongers. Outside, around the perimeter, stalls of dried fruits, spices and herbs, while the fruit and vegetables are placed outside, on the paths placed in front of the market. Along these streets you will find antique shops, modernism and an unidentified miscellany of objects. A sort of flea market comes alive primarily on Sundays.

  • A nice break from touring all the historical sites around Athens. This is a very busy city market, but the sights, smells, colors are well worth the visit. Place for great photography .  more »
  • This place is crowded in the morning (try visiting early so you get the fresh fish), but late in the night you can find some really nice plates served, in the taverns located within the market. Mainly...  more »

  • First off, I will admit that I'm not from Athens, and I did not shop here to find food for cooking, so take my review with a grain of salt. We visited the market and walked through it a few separate times. It was open even through late Saturday afternoon. It's always great seeing what's available at markets. There were mostly fish and meat stands, but you can easily find the vegetable, herbs, nuts, and snacks stands. Those are the ones we loved the most because they obviously had better smells. This market, even if you're not intending to buy anything because you're visiting, is worth at least a half hour walk around in order to see all that it offers.
  • Well worth a look around. Not like the Spanish markets, as it is mostly fish and meat on sale. The fruit and veg can be found a little further from the butchers and isn't as big, more like a regular market. Huge selection of fish and seafood. Surrounding area has a lot of interesting shops selling all sorts of food from herbs to cheese to beans.
  • Good prices for fish but almost nothing is wild-fish . 95% fresh
  • I expected a little bit more, but for a market it's nice to look around.
  • I loved this place! So vibrant. But not one for the squeemish.
