The little old man surrounded by skyscrapers. It's the effect of this as several other small churches much more fascinating Cathedral and palaces-in this case-above them. After the war here has built everywhere and more concrete that dominates these pearls of Greek orthodoxy wonder of their survival

This tiny Byzantine Church, probably from the 13th century, is located right next to the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, very close to the famous Adrianou Street and Ermou. In spite of this monument not part of tours of Athens, it is worthwhile to appreciate it, even on the outside.

This little church is a real beauty, easily missed if you are not looking for it. It is the "Little Metropolis" church, the big one being the Metropolitan Church next to it. It is full of history and ...  more »

A 'small' historical byzantine church beside the 'big' Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens.

Very beautifu small church. It is built from ancient temple remains and marble, carved plaques. It carries ans important history, since it shows how the Christians treated the local cultures.

One of the lovely things about Greece, and Athens in particular, is they way you stumble over delightful churches in the most unlikely places. This is one such example. The pedestrianised shopping streets between Parliament square (Syntagmatos) and Monastirki make for a fascinating evening stroll. The place is buzzing at night and is clearly the place to be. But, seemingly out of nowhere, you find this delightful little church. We loved the fact that churches are usually open and free to enter and look around. This church is small but beautiful. It is also clearly a place where locals or visitors come to pray, to light a candle and to find some spiritual solace in the midst of a hectic and vibrant shopping area. If you are into architecture and buildings it is worth a look. If you are interested in history then marvel at the place this little church has within the developing shopping environment. If you are on a Christian pilgrimage, then step inside and offer a prayer of thanks that, at the centre of a bustling shopping centre, God is in the midst of our everyday lives.

Where to stay in Athens

If you come to Athens for its ancient history, stay in Plaka, a lively neighborhood located within walking distance of the city's major archaeological sites. Although relatively expensive, hotels in this part of town offer spacious rooms, private swimming pools, and rooftop cocktail bars. For less expensive but equally comfortable lodgings, consider boutique hotels and family-run inns in the quiet residential neighborhoods just a short drive south of Plaka. Good rooms fill up early in the season, so plan ahead and book in advance.
