Caves of Diros, Areopoli

4.3
#1 of 7 in Nature in Laconia Region
Explore the series of natural underground waterways at Caves of Diros, the source for many Palaeolithic and Neolithic artifacts now housed in a museum. Take a boat tour to access the tunnels of caves, dramatically lit from within. Traverse below the thousands of stalactites that hang from the domed caved roof as you wend your way through. Though a guide drives the boat, little commentary is offered, leaving room for silence and inspiration. Arrive early to avoid waiting in line, and note the attraction may not be for those who suffer from claustrophobia. Route minutes by boat 20-30 in a cool cave. Guide-gondolier speaks only in Greek. At the beginning of the trips issued a booklet in Russian. You pass by different clusters of stalactites, there are sections with underwater installations. After the boats path portion will be walking.

One of the nest places to visit in Greece and I believe one of the best caves in the world. If something should be adjusted (it is mandatory) this would be the waiting cafeteria for the customers as i...  more »

I was with my girlfriend and we were amazed by the beauty of these caves. The boats are from six people and the coxswain speaks only in Greek. Sometimes we had to lower the head the height at certain points does not exceed every meter, but it is just one of the interesting features. Expect beautiful reflections on water and light play that will leave you breathless. The walking part only serves to get people ... nothing to brag about.

Perfect for a hot day. Exciting for both kids and adults. Cool nice air inside the caves. A bit pricey, but if you take a swim at the beach next to it, i think its well worth the money. 14€ for adults 8€ for discount. Classes and children under 8.

We almost missed the last tour of the day, but thanks to a determined mother who had driven days with her 4 sons to see the caves, we were able to take the tour. Absolutely breathtaking and one of the best memories I have of Greece. Definitely understand how the ancients perceived this as the entrance to the underworld. If you are a fan of Greek mythology or history, don't miss this.

According to Ancient Greek myths this was the entrance to the underworld. A spectacular ride in small boats in underground caves. A very knowledgeable ferryman told us the following details about the environment in the caves: The length of the trip is approx. 30 minutes and it covers 1.5 kilometres of the cave system. The water temperature is around 8° Celsius and the ambient temperature is 18° Celsius, perfect on a hot summer day. The water depth ranges from half a meter to 30 meters at its deepest. Adult tickets are 13 euros, student tickets are 8 euros, and life jackets are required to get on the boat. If you happen to have water or coffee with you you can take it in the boat, but please be careful.

You must go! As far as cave experiences go, this one's a little quirky as you are punting through the labyrinthine network of caves, sometimes very low, instead of walking them. Soak up some sun on the beach or rocks nearby after. Bring a bathing suit for a swim too- very nice water!

Diros caves are beautiful. I had been to caves before but not travelled through them on a boat before. There was a guide chatty but not full of information. Perhaps it would have been different if I spoke Greek? It's definitely still worth a visit if you're in the area.
