Caves of Diros, Areopoli

4.2
#1 of 8 in Nature in Laconia Region
Explore the series of natural underground waterways at Caves of Diros, the source for many Palaeolithic and Neolithic artifacts now housed in a museum. Take a boat tour to access the tunnels of caves, dramatically lit from within. Traverse below the thousands of stalactites that hang from the domed caved roof as you wend your way through. Though a guide drives the boat, little commentary is offered, leaving room for silence and inspiration. Arrive early to avoid waiting in line, and note the attraction may not be for those who suffer from claustrophobia. • If you visit the Mani that is whole a outdoor museum of stone to light, you should definitely visit the caves of Diroy. Is an incredible beauty. The visit lasts nearly fifty minutes. And because it makes cold made sure you got Mazi Sou something hot. In the less expensive ticket. In times of crisis is prohibitive for families.

  • After two hours the road we came to learn that we can visit only the land Department for security reasons, OK, cut tickets and go down. More than ten people kathontoysan in Brown but none of them prothimopoiithike to show us whether or not the entrance of the cave. As for our little ride nobody gave life point either inside or outside the cave, perhaps the ESOS having to deal a little more with the bad attitudes of the staff there at Diros cave ...

  • 7€ for a short but amazing boat tour inside the cave and then a walking tour! Totally worth it!!
  • Great caves compared to other similar attractions I've seen in Greece. We paid €10 as part of a boat trip; the journey in a small boat through the maze of caves took 20 minutes or so, then you walk through some more at your own pace, allowing you to investigate & take photos at your leisure. Children loved it; the small tunnels no wider than the boat, ducking to avoid the low ceiling, stalagmites & stalactites and opening into caverns are like a Disney ride. Also a nice break from the sun in the middle of a Greek summer. A good family trip.
  • Fantastic cave. Take the tour with the boat. 8 euros per person.
  • If you've made it this far into the Mani, it would be a shame not to visit this series of sea caves. They're extensive and definitely out of the ordinary, but could be presented so much better. You are punted around a kilometre or so of illuminated caves, stalactites dangling inches away from your head! The boatmen clearly know their way around well which is reassuring, but the downside of this is that you move constantly from cave to cave and unless you have the front seat in the boat there is little opportunity to see what's on offer. The illuminations are rather basic, and the presentation could be better - perhaps this will come in time. At the end of the boat ride you can walk at leisure through further caves, taking time to study and perhaps photograph the formations. There's a small gift shop and a rather basic cafe at the end, otherwise you'll need to make your way back to Diros or Areopolis for refreshments.
  • Really great don't miss it! It is a boat trip trough endless tunnels with beatiful views! Near the cabrs you can find some good hotels.
