Caves of Diros, Areopoli

(600+ reviews on the web)
Cave Nature / Park
Explore the series of natural underground waterways at Caves of Diros, the source for many Palaeolithic and Neolithic artifacts now housed in a museum. Take a boat tour to access the tunnels of caves, dramatically lit from within. Traverse below the thousands of stalactites that hang from the domed caved roof as you wend your way through. Though a guide drives the boat, little commentary is offered, leaving room for silence and inspiration. Arrive early to avoid waiting in line, and note the attraction may not be for those who suffer from claustrophobia. Caves of Diros is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Areopoli Edition.

  • A magical boat trip through the caves makes this a bit different from many cave visits. Unbelievably quiet and peaceful.  more »
  • Travelling by small boat for around 25 minutes to view these beautiful caves was an eerie experience. Low ceilinged and close quarters around many turns, left me feeling happy to see daylight again.  more »

  • We almost missed the last tour of the day, but thanks to a determined mother who had driven days with her 4 sons to see the caves, we were able to take the tour. Absolutely breathtaking and one of the best memories I have of Greece. Definitely understand how the ancients perceived this as the entrance to the underworld. If you are a fan of Greek mythology or history, don't miss this.
  • Diros caves are beautiful. I had been to caves before but not travelled through them on a boat before. There was a guide chatty but not full of information. Perhaps it would have been different if I spoke Greek? It's definitely still worth a visit if you're in the area.
  • No complaints about service: we visited cave at the mid of Jun and had a good experience (no queue) - boating through the natural wonders and created by man tunnels is a breathtaking journey (not only for kids but for parents too). It wasn't really cold there. Also be careful with your head/fingers (cause rocks are both above and around the boat) - I kept warning my family and all went safe. Combine the trip with visiting Areopoli.
  • Great place for a family visit. Is not a great access for toddlers or disable people. Entrace of the caves are below the ground level 20 steps approx. The main tour is with a boat and a guide. Each boat can take up to 8 visitors. The boat tour is 15/20min long and then there a short distance on foot with steps up and down. Exit is not the same as the entrance. Is approx 10min walk back to the entrance and again steps up and down. Toilets are again down a very steep access not suitable for wheelchair.
  • Beautifully, breathtaking! First part you go on the boat through the caves ! And then walk and enjoy the beauty of the caves!
