Red Beach, Akrotiri

(2.1/5 based on 3,400+ reviews on the web)
Famous for its red rock formations, Red Beach sits just steps from the site of an ancient Minoan settlement destroyed by a volcanic eruption and buried in ash around 1627 BCE. Blue waters lapping this beach create a striking contrast with the all-red landscape of the surrounding steep cliffs, which offer unobstructed views of the sea and the curving coastline. The small beach attracts hundreds of visitors each day, creating a lively resort atmosphere well into the evening hours. Two small cafes, cut into the volcanic cliffs just a short walk from the beach, offer cold drinks and light snacks. For Red Beach and beyond, use our Akrotiri itinerary builder to get the most from your Akrotiri vacation.

  • Beautiful, one-of-a-kind place-particularly recommendable for lovers of raw landscapes and photography enthusiasts. Bathers rather advise against-the beach is narrow, and rocky cliffs of unsecured, high waves also does not encourage.

  • The Red Beach is located in a wide Bay on the South of the island originated for erosion and landslide of mountain that overlooks it. It has a deep red colour contrast with the crystal blue water, offers an extraordinary spectacle. The beach can be reached with some difficulty. To get there you climb a hill and walk to a rugged road, the mountain that parallels the beach.

  • The beach must be visited due to the contrast between the Red Rock and the blue sea. Driving has a free parking (guided by Waze) and after 5 minutes of walking on rocks if you have access to the beach. There is only an establishment selling food and drinks in the parking lot of the arrival. On the beach itself there are no restaurants and even tents.
