Red Beach, Akrotiri

3.0
#1 of 7 in Outdoors in Akrotiri
Famous for its red rock formations, Red Beach sits just steps from the site of an ancient Minoan settlement destroyed by a volcanic eruption and buried in ash around 1627 BCE. Blue waters lapping this beach create a striking contrast with the all-red landscape of the surrounding steep cliffs, which offer unobstructed views of the sea and the curving coastline. The small beach attracts hundreds of visitors each day, creating a lively resort atmosphere well into the evening hours. Two small cafes, cut into the volcanic cliffs just a short walk from the beach, offer cold drinks and light snacks. • Took the bus from Fira to see this beach. Was not impressed. It was dirty and one must be careful with the falling rocks, so just stay at the top to get a view. There is a little pathway from one side...  more »
  • We were in the winter, I think that we were 4 people in total, a beautiful place, of about 200 or 300 meters long where everything has a reddish color that make it very different to any other beach. I don't know if in the summer there will be easier access, but it seems to me that it is not for people with difficulty walking. The road is short but with some difficulty. I recommend renting a car to move in Santorini, everything becomes easier, it is also as easy as renting a bike and very economical.

  • Visit Red Beach, we passed the morning before visiting the site at Akriotiri. In the Akriotiri we got a local bus from the Firy, from there so 10-15 minutes on foot. The trail leads to the beach, rocks and red sand, which can slide, so it's good to have a solid shoes. We are on Red beach, on the beach, we came about almost picked around 9.00 am, which was a great choice, there were few tourists. The beach is only a narrow space, where you can pass. Space would be enough, but from a cliff falling rocks, so two-thirds of the beach are separated by tape and a total of tracked local education supervisor, which was decent, but uncompromising. We were lucky that we get to visit selected in the morning, the beach was still pure, crystal clear water. The combination of the red rocks and the sand, and blankytnej of water makes this place wonderful. We obtained the osuškách and after the obligatory photo shoot, we went to bathe. The first and the last swimming in Red Beach-the water was nice and clean, but then came the waves that caused the incoming ships carrying tourists to the beach. The waves vyplavili the Bank amounts of algae, the whole "approved" beach stretch was under water. Those who didn't manage to go to the osuškám, had the bad luck to have found the wet clothes and backpacks. If you like to swim, you had to go through about two meters wide, bačorinou algae, nothing nice and pleasant. When we realized that the Red Beach may have different faces and it just depends on your luck, you will experience it. I recommend a visit in the morning, before the invasions of the tourist boats. We had planned to come and swim and it are met.

  • Very cool...but difficult to get to.
  • Very scenic & pretty red beach. Sheltered by a red cliff. The ocean water is refreshing and the coarse, rocky sand is BLAZING HOT on your feet. Be warned!
  • Full of people...
  • No worth to be there.
  • You really cant be to Santorini without making a hike up to the Red Beach to capture with the goal the intense red of the rocks and the turquoise water. The visit, however, if done in August, it should end there: people are really too and the beach is small, especially considering that a good portion is off limits for security reasons. If you want to spread your own towel better venture on the rocks which stretch on the left side: shoes are a must but the bathroom is so worth it.
