  • I state that the monastery I visited, I always preferred walking to the baptismal font and the tomb of Saint John. Recommend long pants and covered shoulders for women, you have to cross the main monastery which is a sacred place and we need to be respectful. The hike is downhill (then uphill on the way back so watch out if you legs hurt!) and in stages, the first one is the cave with a kind of natural baptismal, outside the ruins of stone buildings and a beautiful view, then you start to walk to get almost to sea level where according to legend, buried St. John the hermit (although who knows where) , spiritual and mystical place, almost intact and seems to have stepped back centuries if not for some rubbish left by the usual rude tourists, one can also get to the third stage of level rocks and admire the ancient port, lately called ' Beach ' but it is not easy nor recommended to bathe. A brisk walk, I don't recommend to children (the cave) but also with teenagers things to be careful because there are several dangerous spots. The times don't know them but once you are on the path the monastery always allows you to exit (better ask, may change in the future). I went with a child of 5 years, always kept to hand and still constantly under control, had fun even though the return climb the tired a lot (and not just him). A place almost untouched, other times with a beautiful view. Don't go with flip flops or slippers!

  • There are two monasteries located relatively close to each other but there is one major difference between them. One is accessible by car and the other ruined one is only accessible by foot. If you ar...  more »
  • Descent to the monastery along the serpentine. The monastery is situated on a steep cliff. View from the top is breathtaking. Here the traveler is imbued with the spirit has sunk into oblivion of time. When it started getting darker and we after visiting monastery and the cave Church of St. John went upstairs, greeted a monk in black garb, billowing slowly along the path. I had the feeling of a lifetime as ways, each way. As I have mentioned St. John is a story about the cave churches with extreme energy.

  • Amazing ruins and a 1 hour hike down to the sea where you can dive from rocks into the water.
  • A place where you can find total silence with only the sounds of nature

  • The oldest monastery on Crete, now abandoned. You can only walk on a paved trail, sometimes quite steep for 25-30 minutes. With trails enjoys beautiful views of the sea
