  • Why stop at Gortyna when you'll be on your way from Heraklion port to Festus? I have had at least two good reasons: the first was the visit the Church of Saint Titus which is already visible to those who are on the road. This church palaeo-Byzantine art was destroyed by enemies who came from the Sea (Arabs) in the 7th-8th century and what remains, as well as being in very good condition, is also very attractive for its architectural sophistication. The second reason is the famous tables of Gortyna, the first Greek written laws of the news. They were miraculously preserved because the plates were inserted in the construction of the Roman Theatre. Interestingly, the Greek text (very old, as stated above) is written on lines bustrofediche, IE do not wrap at the end of the line but it continues in the lower staff coming back from right to left, and, at the end of the bottom row, continuing from left to right (as do the ploughmen when plowing). It's true what they have noticed in many: the place is all too overlooked and underestimated.

  • September 2015 Gortyn was the capital of Crete in Roman as evidenced by most of the ruins visible on the site, which extends on both sides of the road, it is still a huge excavation site that we visit a small part. You can admire the remains of the Basilica of Saint Titus, looks like it was cut in two. In the odeon, on a huge wall, a set of laws were engraved in a now-defunct language. They were living in the city. You can also see the evergreen tree since Zeus took Europe. From their union was born three boys whose two become Kings in Crete. Visit this site to better understand the tormented Ridge history

  • As it's not as busy as the other big sites on Crete you're able to take some time here and look at the ruins without a herd of people pushing you on. If you can, go here in the spring when the area is...  more »

  • The rooms are often easier than in the photos. The swimming pool is small and stinks of chlorine. My half-board dinner was mostly warm not hot, because I ate only salads. But the room worked out well and also a light bulb was replaced I within a 1/4 h. When I wanted to change rooms because of the Küftungsfensters in the bathroom I have may change the next day. If a room without bunk beds but otherwise as simple as in a youth hostel in Germany

  • The only good thing to say about this hotel is the staff. Everything else was very mediocre and disappointing: very noisy, because right on the main road, also music from the hotel's bar, the rooms were dirty, they were not cleaned, also the bathroom not. The food was a disaster! The coffee undrinkable, canned food, hardly seasoned, hardly fresh...

  • We were in June 2016 at Hotel Gortyna. The room we had booked with sea view and were very happy in the new building. The rooms were a about the other day cleaned and you get fresh towels every 2 days (as well as bed linen also). The breakfast was very Spartan for us (1 variety cheese, 1 type sausage, alternating fresh tomatoes or orange slices, 3 varieties of Müsli, yoghurt, jam and honey, cakes and bread.) This includes a juice machine and coffee machine) sounds a lot, but is simple after a few days. The dinner, however, is very good! Hot and cold buffet with very good food! The staff was really friendly and helpful! It should be remembered that the hotelier with package holidays receives only €7,50 per person/day, the Agency collected the rest! Thus he must economize and the breakfast was the only shortcoming! The rooms are large and decorated in Spartan (just Mediterranean)! But CLEAN! The pool is small but fine! The highway where the hotel is located, is not so disturbing, because the balcony door insulates well! One should also clearly be the sewer pipes are not so in Crete such as ours. Hot, throw toilet paper in the provided paper bucket. This is so everywhere, no matter whether 5 * hotel or tavern etc. Hotel Gortyna also has a nice pool bar with music and good drinks! The rooms are soundproof so that we have heard nothing from the neighbors. Shortcoming: TV program on german... 4 channel, if you want to look in the evening but a little... RTL, EUROSPORT AND RTL2. Ride again, book directly at the hotel, as it is for HP only ca.max. 13 Euro per person. I advise everyone of all inclusive! There are so nice, cheap and above all tasty tavernas in the area! A rental car (we recommend the on the other hand yellow TRAIN) is already necessary, since Skaletta has not much to offer. We can highly recommend also Rainbow's Tavern across from the hotel! ONLY super sandy beaches are towards Chania, behind Rethymno! Thank you for the great holiday hotel Gortyna! We will be back!
