Temple of Aphaia, Aegina

Historic Site Tourist Spot
Visit Temple of Aphaia to see a Hellenistic temple built around 500 BCE in honor of the goddess Aphaia. The temple was built on the site of an earlier 570 BCE temple, which was destroyed in a fire. The remains of the previous structure were incorporated into the construction of the newer one, as evidenced by the two recovered pediments (triangular spaces that form the gable of the roof) that were built into the temple wall. The well-preserved structure was a favorite among Neoclassical and Romantic artists, including J.M.W. Turner, yet it usually remains free from crowds. Enjoy the spectacular view from the temple and stop by the small on-site museum, which tells the history of the site's excavation, restoration, and the sculptures found here. • €6 for entry ticket and totally worth it. The ruins are magnificent, after 2500 years. The historical presence of this place left me in awe, and as a history nerd I couldn't have been happier. Bonus that there were hardly anyone else there (20 minute before closing at 19:00), and for the stunning views of the island in several directions.
  • This is one of the best preserved ruins in all of Greece. They call it the 'original parthenon' because of the same building style. It's also a beautiful drive up to the ruins with pistachio trees. Speaking of pistachios, make sure you get the pistachio ice cream at the little store near the temple, it's the best in entire world!
  • A wonderful cultural site with a small museum. Situated on top of a hill the site offers panoramic views all around the isle of Aegina.
  • Old temple ruin costs $6 euro to get in. Only need to stay for 5 minutes. Best spend $ on Acropolis in Athens. Definitely not worth your trip to see this here.
  • Good view and an interesting ruin. Significantly less crowded than the Acropolis, so it was much more enjoyable.
