4.7/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web
Visit Temple of Aphaia to see a Hellenistic temple built around 500 BCE in honor of the goddess Aphaia. The temple was built on the site of an earlier 570 BCE temple, which was destroyed in a fire. The remains of the previous structure were incorporated into the construction of the newer one, as evidenced by the two recovered pediments (triangular spaces that form the gable of the roof) that were built into the temple wall. The well-preserved structure was a favorite among Neoclassical and Romantic artists, including J.M.W. Turner, yet it usually remains free from crowds. Enjoy the spectacular view from the temple and stop by the small on-site museum, which tells the history of the site's excavation, restoration, and the sculptures found here. • We are raised with mountain bikes from Souvala out. I would rather choose the moped next time ;) the entrance fee is €6, what is much better spent than the €20 for the entrance to the Acropolis! Further features of the Temple of Aphaia: no crowds like the Acropolis, the temple is better preserved/nice, access to the small museum is included in the ticket price and the view is great (ok, that's it in Athens also...). After the visit, the pistachio ice cream from the souvenir shop is recommended.

  • Less visited than many ancient sites so the atmosphere is magical. Visit in late afternoon for stunning light and beautiful views of the Saronic Gulf.
  • Beautiful temple! Easy to get there as well.
  • Very quick stop here and the place is amazing. This location, Poseidon temple at Sounio and Acropolis in Athens make a perfect triangle, something that I need to read more on the meaning and purpose.
  • Perfect location, fantastic views all around and a great ancient temple quite well preserved. A must see in aegina.
  • Not very popular but very well preserved ancient temple, don't miss it
