Temple of Aphaia, Aegina

(4.7/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Visit Temple of Aphaia to see a Hellenistic temple built around 500 BCE in honor of the goddess Aphaia. The temple was built on the site of an earlier 570 BCE temple, which was destroyed in a fire. The remains of the previous structure were incorporated into the construction of the newer one, as evidenced by the two recovered pediments (triangular spaces that form the gable of the roof) that were built into the temple wall. The well-preserved structure was a favorite among Neoclassical and Romantic artists, including J.M.W. Turner, yet it usually remains free from crowds. Enjoy the spectacular view from the temple and stop by the small on-site museum, which tells the history of the site's excavation, restoration, and the sculptures found here. • Went on a sunny February day and this was one of the best things we saw during our days near Athens. Beautiful and well maintained temple ruins with a great view over the sea. Highly recommended.
  • Have just come to Greece and broken buildings seen here is still good state of preservation. Well just casually in the near field. Also good numbers of tourists even less stable.

  • Visited the temple on a day trip from Athens. Very well preserved and spectacularly located. Almost had the place to ourselves. We caught the bus from Aegina town and were advised that it would return...  more »

  • An Amazing Temple of 490BC Do not miss the opportunity to visit Transportation from Aegina Port with Local Bus Time from Aegina Port: about 20' minutes Bus ticket 2€ one way Entrance in the monument 3€
  • Rather nice piece of architecture, but the site sorely needs a museum or at least more text on the history and significance of the building.
  • Probably the most famous historical landmark of Aegina, this ancient temple is simply astonishing. The view of the sea down below is breathtaking, as well!
  • Wonderfully preserved temple with great views.
  • Very nice archeological site with an amazing view on the rest of the island.
