Temple of Aphaia, Aegina

(550+ reviews on the web)
Historic Site
Visit Temple of Aphaia to see a Hellenistic temple built around 500 BCE in honor of the goddess Aphaia. The temple was built on the site of an earlier 570 BCE temple, which was destroyed in a fire. The remains of the previous structure were incorporated into the construction of the newer one, as evidenced by the two recovered pediments (triangular spaces that form the gable of the roof) that were built into the temple wall. The well-preserved structure was a favorite among Neoclassical and Romantic artists, including J.M.W. Turner, yet it usually remains free from crowds. Enjoy the spectacular view from the temple and stop by the small on-site museum, which tells the history of the site's excavation, restoration, and the sculptures found here. • To reach this temple from Athens Centre, it is necessary to take the metro to Piraeus, and take a ferry to Aegina. The cheapest ferry, which is also that more time takes you (1 HR 15 min), departs Pier E8 and costs €8 pers, route. The first exit is to the 8.20 and the last return is to 1815. Once you reach the port of Aegina you can take a taxi for €15 /trayecto to the temple. Access to the site of the temple is free for student groups, but can not be entered in the temple.

  • The Temple of Aphaia is slightly younger than the Parthenontempel on the Acropolis. On signs you can see drawings on which points in the temple construction was in the meantime advancing insight. The temple is built on a beautiful place high on the island of Aegina. He is fine and it is well worth the trouble to visit him from Athens as a day trip.

  • An Amazing Temple of 490BC Do not miss the opportunity to visit Transportation from Aegina Port with Local Bus Time from Aegina Port: about 20' minutes Bus ticket 2€ one way Entrance in the monument 3€
  • Rather nice piece of architecture, but the site sorely needs a museum or at least more text on the history and significance of the building.
  • Probably the most famous historical landmark of Aegina, this ancient temple is simply astonishing. The view of the sea down below is breathtaking, as well!
  • Wonderfully preserved temple with great views.
  • Very nice archeological site with an amazing view on the rest of the island.
