The Gibraltar Museum, Gibraltar

4.2
Built over the remains of a Moorish bathhouse, The Gibraltar Museum houses various collections that shed light on Gibraltar's millennia-old natural history and cultural heritage. General Sir Alexander Godley, a former governor of Gibraltar, established the museum in 1930. See the 8 m (26 ft) long scale model of the Rock, made in 1865; walk through rooms with reconstructed prehistoric landscapes and caves; and see a Neanderthal coming alive through a forensic reconstruction from skulls and fossil remains. You'll also learn about the seven centuries of Moorish rule, the Great Siege, and the British period. It's worth taking a guide, considering the displays are static and not very engaging on their own. • Due to Storm Emma, I visited the museum to avoid the torrential rain. It was very interesting, well laid out and not too big. To do it justice, allow at least 90 minutes. Cost £5.  more »

  • Fascinating and not at all boring compared to some museums. It is quite small but there is a lot to take in. I especially liked the short cinema film and the scale model of the rock. It gave me a chance to have a look at the whole rock and put places into perspective from the point of view of the wars and how this little country has developed. Well done Gibraltar.
  • A very interesting museum. We spend a good couple of hours wondering around in here. The layout is a bit odd as the exhibits don't seem to have any order to them when you walk around. Entry fee is £5 per person which we though was good value for the amount of history I this place. There is no parking close but plenty of parking around the town, gibralter is so small that you can walk from one end to the other in an hour or so.
  • Delightful idiosyncratic building with a varied collection. The video displays are good but more written information and labelling would help.
  • Good presentation of collections and history of Gibraltar. Short film summarising the history of Gibraltar a must for first time visitors and a first thing to see before visiting the place. Good selection of Gibraltar books for sale.
  • The highlight of this museum is getting to see up close the old bath house built by the Muslims. But with an entry fee of 5 pounds, i would recommend skipping this attraction.
