Explore the plant and animal life of the Rock of Gibraltar while enjoying scenic vistas by climbing Mediterranean Steps, the area's hidden gem. This rough, untouristed path meanders along the eastern face of the rock, through a natural reserve and past several natural caves and some World War II fortifications. The British constructed the steps as part of the army communication system--you can still see two 19th-century coastal defense guns along the way. The relatively challenging climb requires a reasonable level of fitness and isn't suitable for those with a fear of heights. It’s quite the trek, but totally worth it! The views were incredible. I’d say this is more for an adventurous person. Take some water though! more »

These are good to challenge your fitness and see the scenic side of Gibraltar. Not for the unfit or people with medical conditions more »

What a great way to visit the top, almost a private ascent, its not that hard really if your fit, there is no water/stops at all so bear that on mind. Took us about 90 mins from the Jewish Gate to the... more »

These steps are a great way to see the eastern portion of Gibraltar. I recommend starting at the Jewish Cemetery and climbing up the mountain rather than starting here at the mark of the map and walking down. The views and the flowers are well worth the trip and while it is marked difficult it is doable if you can climb steps.

This is a tough walk but very rewarding. The views of the African and Spanish coastline are fabulous. It seemed like the longest 1.8km I have ever walked. Also be aware this walk is on the eastern side of the rock with little cover, and in summer late morning, early afternoon you will have the sun blazing down on you. Hiking boots will help as surface pretty rough.

The Mediterranean steps are a must see when visiting Gibraltar! It’s a beautiful little hike up to the rock with great views of Africa, Algeciras and the coast line! Important- DON’T forget to take water!
-
By far the best way to enjoy the rock, really not that hard for anyone for and healthy, no water or stops etc though and the sun is strong on the East side but you can be up in an hour, great scenery.
-
Quite a hike! Only for the fit. Be smart and start your hike up early because the sun beats hard on the east side of the Rock. Also wear good hiking boots because the loose gravel can be slippery.
