Shai Hills Resource Reserve, Greater Accra

3.3
#4 of 9 in Wildlife in Greater Accra
Venture through a cultural and natural sanctuary at Shai Hills Resource Reserve, covered with coastal evergreen savannah and granite hills dotted by dry forests. Established in 1962, the government-protected reserve encompasses an area of 51 sq km (20 sq mi) and rests near Volta Lake, not far from the capital. Don your hiking boots to explore the surrounding archaeological sites and observe olive baboons, kobs, bushbucks, Senegalese parrots, cuckoos, and other species up close. Home to the Shai people until their expulsion by the British colonial army in 1873, the grounds retain many cultural traces scattered about. • Not so much for the animals here. Plenty of baboons in the reception area and they are friendly enough to get close to people. Harmless though. A few zebras and ostrich doesn’t entice much. Best to ha...  more »

  • About an hour and a half from Accra (depending on the traffic) Shai Hills in Doryumu, in the Shai Osudoku District in the Greater Accra Region is a nice natural/game reserve with a variety of animals. You can spend a few hours driving and walking around including hiking to a nearby mountain passing an interesting cave/pass with ladders to the top. A nice Saturday morning activity.
  • A great place to visit for the landscape alone and close to Accra. While widlife is not abundant, still worth the effort.
  • Beautiful scenery. The atmosphere is refreshing. Great place to relax and enjoy wildlife.
  • Good for hiking but not much animals in there.
  • A cool atmosphere with lots of wildlife in a natural setting
