Alte Mainbruecke, Wurzburg
Categories: Bridges, Tourist Spots
Constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries, Alte Mainbruecke serves as one of Wurzburg's iconic landmarks. The 185 m (607 ft) arched causeway spans the river Main in the heart of the old city. In the distance, you'll spy the town's spires on one side and the Marienburg Fortress on the other. The 12 detailed, sandstone statues of saints adorning the length of the bridge were added during the Baroque era. The structure was partially destroyed by retreating German troops in 1945. Its faithful reconstruction used materials from a nearby quarry. Put Alte Mainbruecke at the forefront of your travel plans using our Wurzburg vacation planner.

It was the best tip possible. As we were coming to the historic city centre, next to the Cathedral. We couldn't see the bridge about the amount of people gathered in their vicinity. Beautiful people and lively, of all ages, taking white wine Silvaner (typical of the region), listening to music, chatting and enjoying life. It was a Saturday in late summer, and see the sunset at that location was a privilege. Very good! At the bottom of the bridge there are bars for beer and drinks. There are numerous restaurants and bars nearby too.show original
