Alte Mainbruecke, Wurzburg

4.7
#2 of 51 in Things to do in Wurzburg
Constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries, Alte Mainbruecke serves as one of Wurzburg's iconic landmarks. The 185 m (607 ft) arched causeway spans the river Main in the heart of the old city. In the distance, you'll spy the town's spires on one side and the Marienburg Fortress on the other. The 12 detailed, sandstone statues of saints adorning the length of the bridge were added during the Baroque era. The structure was partially destroyed by retreating German troops in 1945. Its faithful reconstruction used materials from a nearby quarry. Put Alte Mainbruecke at the forefront of your travel plans using our Wurzburg vacation planner.

Mandatory visit to try to understand what life was like in the middle ages. It overlooks the fortress of Marienburg and is close to the Residenz. in the early part of the bridge there is small bars and restaurants that sell the regional wine in bowls to drink on the bridge, which is a tradition.

The old main bridge in Würzburg is the most beautiful of all main bridges I've seen from Bayreuth to Mainz.

  • This is a very lovely place where locals and tourists get together to enjoy a glass of local wine while looking at the beautiful landscape featuring vineyards, the fortress, the river... Expect to pay 5€ as a deposit for the glass, which will be refunded when you bring it back, and about 4 € for the wine, and believe me they are generous...
  • One of the most must see and iconic places to be in Wuerzburg. A wine on this oldest Stone bridge is definitely recommended. Try the white wine Silvaner and enjoy the atmosphere
  • Definitely one of the biggest tourist attractions in Würzburg. It's an old cobblestone walking bridge, perfect for viewing the festung and watching the ships pass through the water lock system. Just be aware the bridge is also an official bike route and can get very crowded from wine drinkers that like to hang out.
  • We walked across the bridge almost daily to get to the market. This bridge is old and among the best to see in Europe. There is always lots of people hanging out on the bridge. Great place to people watch. You see people having a picnic to enjoying a glass of wine with friends to people pass by.
  • First place to see in Würzburg. The view is amazing at all times of the day under any weather day and night. It always look charmingly different. When the weather is good, you can get very good Franken wine directly on the bridge, but I would personnaly save the queue, walk two minutes to Kupsch to get shop to get a bottle (often offered with a glass). Don't stay in the middle of the road, since a lot of crazy bikes have to go through, to go to Zellerau (while cursing those pesky sunny day tourists ^^)
