Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Worlitz, a 142 sq km (55 sq mi) garden of "orderly wilderness" influenced by Enlightenment ideals of order and rationality, was built after two buddies' late-18th-century road trip. Duke Leopold III of Anhalt-Dessau and his friend, architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff, had just returned from a tour of Italy, the Netherlands, England, France, and Switzerland, and they were inspired by the naturalistic landscape gardens at Stourhead Gardens and Ermenonville. That inspiration led them to build this garden. Today, you can walk, bike, and even ride horses through the park's green meadows, shady woods, and around placid lakes and rivers. Gondolas and ferries sit on the water, inviting you for a peaceful tour. Several small palaces and chateaus stand among the greenery, open to visitors and complete with their original 18th-century furnishings and Rococo paintings. • Three times I have now visited this beautiful park. And there will be still a few visits. You can enjoy walking, take a gondola ride and see also Wedding couples. I think the many small bridges very nice, all the buildings in different construction art. And also the volcano looks great. The Park is the most beautiful course in the spring and summer, but also the autumn has its charm. A visit is worthwhile in any case!

  • We visited the Wörlitz Park on a Saturday with wonderfully bright autumn sun. Although at some stations the visitors plenty accumulated, there was to explore isolated winding paths. In the Park, always great views on the different buildings, so the Castle and the Gothic House offer to name only two. The lakes and the countless channels can be chauffeured to boats. It is possible to also cross over with small hand-operated ferries. We visited also the nearby falconry, which offers daily at 15: 00 an air show with Eagles, vultures and owls. A great day in a huge, beautifully landscaped park and without admission.

  • The directions to the UNESCO world cultural heritage is very poorly signposted. But compensate the plants. Especially the gondola is unique: an explanatory and cheerful "skipper" on a lake in its size not to be expected. It's been a pleasure for the eye.
