Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Worlitz, Worlitz

4.8
#2 of 20 in Parks in Saxony-Anhalt
Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Worlitz, a 142 sq km (55 sq mi) garden of "orderly wilderness" influenced by Enlightenment ideals of order and rationality, was built after two buddies' late-18th-century road trip. Duke Leopold III of Anhalt-Dessau and his friend, architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff, had just returned from a tour of Italy, the Netherlands, England, France, and Switzerland, and they were inspired by the naturalistic landscape gardens at Stourhead Gardens and Ermenonville. That inspiration led them to build this garden. Today, you can walk, bike, and even ride horses through the park's green meadows, shady woods, and around placid lakes and rivers. Gondolas and ferries sit on the water, inviting you for a peaceful tour. Several small palaces and chateaus stand among the greenery, open to visitors and complete with their original 18th-century furnishings and Rococo paintings. After an overnight stay in Wörlitz, we already started before breakfast with a stroll along the South shore of Wörlitz Lake. We were despite midsummer (= high season?) rewarded with exclusivity = no one was on the road at 7:30. The great followed after breakfast tour through the garden, taking advantage of the cable ferries. Wonderfully, on every corner, there are new to discover, nature, architecture, great sightlines, centuries-old trees, a dream. And again: for a such beautiful destination, also apart of the cable ferries for €1.50, free, incredibly weak visits. According to our observation, most as day visitors come and goes for 10 euros for an hour passive (but with continuous information of the boatman) on one of the gondolas. Conclusion: We saw a great photo calendar at the tourist office and wondered why the season is only from March until November. This Park deserves a year-round visit. We warmly recommend him

Far more than a garden. The entrance to the garden costs nothing so pay for and take the gondola tour for an overview and introduction. This simply whets the appetite for more information & background...  more »
