LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Nachtigall, Witten

#1 of 7 in Things to do in Witten
Explore the cradle of West German coal mining at LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Nachtigall, an important industrial heritage site preserving one of the first deep mining shafts in the country, sunk in 1839. See the engine house with its still-operable steam engine and marvel at the huge rectangular chimney of the boiler house, which, after the coal was exhausted, converted into a brick factory. • A museum mine where you can see how coal was mined and as the mined coal would further processed as for burning explains very good and clear all tiles. The leadership in the galleries is a must. If one should close a visit are planned.

  • The Museum is well worth a visit. Now it is worth especially since currently beautiful photos on the history of the steam locomotives are shown!

  • Must-see for lovers of historic mining. The mine is an experience. The entire complex is worth a visit and is used for larger events.

  • Big (foreign) terrain with characteristic plants, including square chimney, and beautiful playground. Highlight, however, is a guided tour through the mining tunnel (very authentic in often hunched posture).
