Wernigerode Castle, Wernigerode

Categories: Castles, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
4.3/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web
One of the most popular castle destinations in Saxony-Anhalt, Wernigerode Castle was built into a slope in 1213. In the 18th century, Count Christian Ernest had the castle renovated in the Baroque style that you see today. More renovations in the 19th century added the romantic touch that makes the castle seem as if it arose from the pages of a fairytale. The interior courtyard comes to life during the Christmas season with activities and events happening every hour. These include storytelling, minstrels, reenactments, and a Christmas market. The castle museum is open throughout the year and often hosts conferences, weddings, and events because of its beautiful interior architecture. • Very nice Castle. The tour is very interesting. (But maybe a little boring for kids) The often very lengthy audio-guide. The Castle Cafe is just OK.

  • Before reaching the village already you can see far. It is a castle which seems vigilant in your region. Magnificence and all Castle in Germany... deserves to be visited.

  • The top free car park is 500 metres uphill to the Castle. You can save parking in the city and the expensive ride with the light rail. The sales staff could offer us a cheap family card for the tours and extra tickets for Tower ascent and vaulted cellar. I'd save the latter extra ticket me for the next time you visit, because up and down to get the Tower Climb only in a group, what takes 20 minutes at the somewhat frail participate. The view is good only in good weather. The Vault has nothing to offer, except maybe a relevant buildings in 3D city model. With a normal map you get to excellent on the tours see the finest residential details from magnificent rooms with antique furniture. Unfortunately, the guides were not advertised and the few but interesting written notices and a really nice and quaint Museum employees as informants will remain so. Bottom line: A cheap must for every Eastern Harz tourists, if you leave off the Tower ticket

  • Awesome castle to look at and walk around in... Also a few nice rw
  • Phenomenal castle!! Do not skip this one. It's one of the top 5 in Germany. English guide is available. Restorations are perfect, beautiful, artistic work. A long history of Germany is here. Must see.
  • My son of 4 years and I took the guided tour to the highest point of the castle. It had a nice view. Half way the tour my son had to go to the bathroom and i asked the guide if he could wait five minutes while we went to the nearby restroom. The guide told me that he could not and shut and locked the door to the second tower. Hereby he shut us off from the rest of the tour. After our unfinished visit to the castle we went to get something to drink on the nearby terras with view over the town. It seemed there that the waitresses didn't care very much for their customers because getting their attention was impossible. My conclusion is therefore that the site has a nice view, but the people could be somewhat more hospitable. When you are here, don't forget to take the city tour with the train. You'll see every hotspot (also the castle ;-) ) and get to see everything at your comfort.
  • Very mejestic. View from the top is amazing specially if you go in spring. Theres a big bone lying on the left side of the castle, i am not sure is it a real one coz its so huge.
  • Nice view. Better viewing the castle from the town though. Most of the castle was closed while we were there. Great little gift shop for the kids though
