Schlossmuseum Weimar, Weimar

4.3
#4 of 10 in Museums in Weimar
Located inside the heritage-listed city castle, Schlossmuseum Weimar boasts a large collection of paintings dating from the Middle Ages to about 1900. The museum takes up the north, east, and west wings of the castle, originally built as a ducal residence and expanded considerably during its 500-year history. The former ducal collection is organized chronologically and spreads through many of the castle's grand rooms, some of which contain authentic furniture from the Baroque period. On the ground floor, you can explore the works of German masters, as well as a collection of sculptures and crafts, including furniture from the workshop of the renowned cabinetmaker David Roentgen. This floor also displays porcelain figures made by some of Europe's best-known manufacturers. Be sure to explore the second floor, where you can see works by the celebrated Weimar school of painting, an art style popular during the 19th century. • the castle is huge, and from outside in different angles always interesting to look at, the EUR 8.00 admission (incl. audio guide) really to use are needed in order a whole day; within the framework of the Weimar-card, it's free and if you have time the 2nd just for a quick passage should stock concentrate the Cranch pictures on the ground floor and the Impressionists in the 3rd floor is not much, living quarters are impressive to see in other castles

  • Peculiar museum, with large paintings collection in a palace where you will leave large, festive also can see that belonged to the ducal family of Saxe Weimar. A beautiful Renoir, Van Rysselberghe, Max Beckman, but above all a very rich collection of Cranach. Definitely worth it, although we pretty quickly by the extensive collection of impressionists of Weimar hiked.
