Chateau of Belvedere (Schloss Belvedere), Weimar

4.5
#2 of 12 in Historic Sites in Weimar
In 1724, Johann August Richter and Gottfried Heinrich Krohne designed the Chateau of Belvedere (Schloss Belvedere) as a pleasure house and summer residence for Duke Ernst August of Saxe-Weimar. In the gardens, updated in the English landscape style in 1811, elegant pavilions flank the chateau's entrance. The plaster-relief interior houses 18th-century porcelain, faïence, paintings, and furniture belonging to the art collections of Weimar. Stroll through the recently restored festive hall and silver salon, and journey back in time to the storied house parties of the mid-18th century. Take in the historical carriage collection and exhibits on hunting and garden culture in the times of Duke August, experiencing life as it was centuries ago. Pick up the audio guide included in the ticket price for more historical information. After your visit, stop at the nearby teashop for refreshments. on a hill located just outside of Weimar, cost 6,50 incl. audio guide tour (worthwhile), but also the grounds free of charge to visit and the Park are free within the framework of the Weimar-card, worth seeing, the Orangerie Garden was very impressed

The chateau is easily reached from Weimar by bike or by car. We cycled there in about 20 minutes. It is nicely renovated and well worth a visit. The surrounding park is well kept and the famous Orange...  more »

Belvedere is located approximately 3 km from the city centre and is easily accessible both by car (paid parking) and take the bus (line 1). The Park is spacious and not crowded. A visit to the Orangery is recommended in the spring/summer. A visit to the castle must not be, prefer something more time in the Park. There, there is much to discover, is but also not amazing (as compared to the Schwetzinger Castle Park)!

  • Schloss Belvedere is one of the most beautiful castles in and around Weimar. Especially the gardens and parks around it are absolutely splendid. They become truly magical when being visited in the evening or at night. Visiting this place has been one of the most inspiring moments in my life.
  • Accessible by bike! it is an amazing road! Nice place to visit!
  • On a bicycle, take the path around the castle heading east and connects up to the Ilm river, a great ride.
  • Picturesque and beautiful. Toller Park and great environment. Definitely a worthwhile destination.
