Warnemünde Church is a neogothic building in Warnemünde, which is a part of the hanseatic city of Rostock. Construction of the current brick building began in 1866 and the church was consecrated in 1871. The church of Warnemünde stands for over one hundred years in the middle of the town and is the center of the Evangelical Lutheran congregation. For the community along with many guests it is a place of rest and prayer. But it has also even given protection from flooding. The maritime atmosphere is shown by the special votive ships inside.HistoryThe old church, which burned down twice, stood on the Warnow riverside for around 600 years and was demolished, after completion of the new church, in 1872. The construction of the new church began in 1866 on the western side of the old fisherman's village, and it was ready in 1871 the church. The new building, designed by architect, Krueger of Schwerin, and built by master builder Wachenhusen of Rostock, was erected on the western outskirts of the settlement, but nowadays is the centre of the town. The church therefore is in fact relatively young, but decorated with major furnishings that were inherited from the earlier building. Originally three narrow lancet windows were planned for the transept facades. But the principal, Frederick Francis II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg, patron of Warnemünde Church insisted that a single large window would be much more appropriate; the architects designed the rose windows, which can still be seen today.

  • Hidden away from the old stream between houses. A cute little church. Plain and simple by the architectural style. Pretty to look at. Unfortunately closed when we were there.

  • On thw outside quite ordinary. On the inside quite the opposite. T shaped layout with a warm wooden ceiling. Clearly a church with obvious ties to a maritime history. Well worth avisit. Visited a Moza...  more »

  • A very beautiful evangelische church witin the city. The architecture is neo-gothic and is almost completeyl made up of red stone. Is widely visited by most of the people who visit Warnemünde. There is a big parking lot and a decent market place with shopping and eating joints around the church area.
  • I would like to assess here not the building, but rather the staff. On the 05.08.17 (14:30), I was allowed to accompany a wedding in Warnemünde Church photographically. After some years of professional experience it has never happened with me, that a pastor has forbidden the photographing me in his speech. I scan very discreet, always in the background out and without annoying Flash technology. The pastor, who gave a very spontaneous and content very inappropriate speech, mentioned then also equal to a second time, he does not like to see someone photographed the wedding. The shooting was however allowed and coordinated with the bride and groom and Pastor! For me as a service provider it was very uncomfortable and for the bride and groom of course anything but glad that they receive not the photos to the desired extent.
