St Mary's Column, Trier

3.8
#17 of 53 in Sightseeing in Trier
Monument Tourist Spot
An easily recognizable landmark overlooking Trier, St Mary's Column offers panoramic views of the city and its river. Constructed in the 19th century using donations made by ordinary Trier citizens, the statue of Saint Mary stands on a 40 m (130 ft) pillar and gazes protectively over the surrounding area. Though not particularly steep, the uphill walk does require a good pair of comfortable shoes. Don't forget to charge your camera, and pack a light snack and some drinking water. • You can walk up to the Marian column – according to the target spiders, which takes about 45 minutes. We have the car taken, because at high summer temperatures we wanted to us rather not do on the steep climb. The road is narrow, limited in some places on both sides by high walls and it should go be sure carefully and slowly. Also you should drive at a time, where not so much going on, because the number of parking spaces is not particularly large. This is then only a few step from column - and the views would be worth any ascent on foot. Quite trier lies directly under a spread. Really great.

  • To reach the stairs to the naval pillar at the foot of the mountain on the so-called "stairway to heaven" - but caution: many levels! It is rewarded at the column with a magnificent view over the city of Trier! By car you reach the column also.

Where to stay in Trier

Trier offers a small selection of places to stay within the city. A youth hostel and a camper parking equipped with showers and toilet but no power caters to the budget travelers visiting the city. For more comfort, look for hotels in the Olewig area or Porta Nigra. Several four-star hotels provide even more luxury at relatively affortable price.
