Mariensaeule, Trier

4.3
#17 of 121 in Things to do in Trier
An easily recognizable landmark overlooking Trier, Mariensaeule offers panoramic views of the city and its river. Constructed in the 19th century using donations made by ordinary Trier citizens, the statue of Saint Mary stands on a 40 m (130 ft) pillar and gazes protectively over the surrounding area. Though not particularly steep, the uphill walk does require a good pair of comfortable shoes. Don't forget to charge your camera, and pack a light snack and some drinking water. • We are here in the evening, running this is not recommended. It is a very high climb. This is easy to reach by car and you just need one more piece of stairs. When we arrived (in the dark) was once at the top the views breathtaking! The whole city is situated between 2 ' mountains '. The lights of the city is bizarre pretty to look at. Also during the day, this seems to me a beautiful view! If you're in Trier are you must surely have seen! And specifically in the dark! Photos posted but unfortunately it is not clear to show up on a picture how beautiful it really is!

  • Who is in Trier should be sure to the Marian column! To see the best once in daylight in the morning and in the night the floodlit Trier. With a glass of champagne or red wine!

  • Beautiful panoramic view of the beautiful city. You can visit there during good weather. Drive almost under the same column.

  • Beautiful place to see the trier from the bird eyes
  • Climb the hill for a terrific view of Trier, it's really good to do last thing so you can look back at where you have walked throughout the day. IMPORTANT INFO: I visited on 22nd April 2017 and the footpath that passes the cemetery is closed. I asked a local and he told me that some of the footpath had crumbled away so they had closed it for safety reasons. The only other way I could find to walk up was to follow the road - a long and tiring walk but definitely worth it.
  • Beautiful view over Trier
  • Except for the view on Trier nothing special. And the path straight to the top from the cemetary is not what you would call user friendly.
  • Great view 👍

Where to stay in Trier

Trier offers a small selection of places to stay within the city. A youth hostel and a camper parking equipped with showers and toilet but no power caters to the budget travelers visiting the city. For more comfort, look for hotels in the Olewig area or Porta Nigra. Several four-star hotels provide even more luxury at relatively affortable price.
