Rheinstein Castle is a castle near the town of Trechtingshausen in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany.HistoryThe castle was constructed in about 1316/1317. Rheinstein Castle was important for its strategic location. By 1344, the castle was in decline. By the time of the Palatine War of Succession, the castle was very dilapidated. During the romantic period in the 19th century, Prince Frederick of Prussia (1794–1863) bought the castle and it was rebuilt.DescriptionBurg Rheinstein possesses a working drawbridge and portcullis, which are typical of medieval castle architecture and defences. The castle is open to the public. Just past the gift shop near the entrance is an opening on the left to the courtyard, which offers a spectacular view of the Rhine. Rheinstein's courtyard is known as the Burgundy Garden after the Burgundy grape vine growing there. The vine, which is approximately 500 years old, still produces grapes. From the garden, steps lead down to the castle chapel. In the centre of the Gothic altar piece of the chapel there is a woodcarving depicting Jesus at the Last Supper. Between the rock and chapel, additional steps lead down to the royal crypt of Prince Frederick William Louis's family.Plan your Rheinstein Castle visit and explore what else you can see and do in Trechtingshausen using our Trechtingshausen trip itinerary maker .

Rheinstein Castle Reviews
Lange schon kenne ich die letzte im Rheintal in Familienbesitz befindliche Burg Rheinstein - es mögen über 20 Jahre sein. And what can I say - the castle is more beautiful (if I could... Let's say from my apartment). Not only the equipment is maintained - also the hospitality of Chef du Cuisine Marco Hecher is phenomenal – it should be remembered always different ideas - that everything must laboriously up the Castle. An absolute must when visiting nearby Assmannshausen.

Nice castle on the River Rhein. The owners are the same folks you will see at the snack bar and the gift shop (I thought that was cool). Lots of interesting things inside the castle itself. This whole area is chock full of castles and wine (also very good by the way)
An impressive, lovingly restored castle that is one of the finer castles that I've ever visited. Self guided tour allows guests to see many intimate details of the property along the Rhine River. Admission is cash only. A cafe and wc are available. There is a hillside to traverse with switchback before the drawbridge entrance. There are many stairs, so not wheelchair or stroller friendly. Accessible from Frankfurt via train and ferry.
Really nice Castle to visit. One of the most beautiful Castles from the Rhine Valey.
Very cool castle. Good for kids and adults. Great combination of ruins, renovated rooms, and (charmingly few) modern additions. Lots of history right there on the premises. Easy to see in an hour or two, but satisfying, too. Modern cafe on the property is great, too.
Closed of the season until March 16th but had a good time walking around the outside!
