Grabkapelle auf dem Wuerttemberg, Stuttgart

When King Wilhelm I's young Russian wife, Katharina, died unexpectedly in 1819, he erected Grabkapelle auf dem Wuerttemberg high above Stuttgart as a testament to their eternal love. This location on the site of the former residence of the dukes of Württember had been one of Katharina's favorite spots, offering spectacular views over the city and the Neckar Valley. The inscription above the chapel's entrance reads "Love Never Dies," and the spot is considered by locals to be one of the city's most romantic. The mausoleum is among the most impressive examples of Neoclassical in the region, inspired by the Pantheon in Rome and striking in its severe style. Inside you'll find an iconostasis (wall of icons)--the chapel still serves a Russian Orthodox place of worship. Underground are the Carrara marble sarcophagi of Katharina, King Wilhelm I himself, and his eldest daughter, Marie Friederike Charlotte von Württemberg. • As a local, after a long time I was once again with study friends at the end of our Teffen on the Württemberg. Even the walk from Uhlbach or Rotenberg was an experience. The efforts were rewarded by a beautiful view - in the best September weather - in all directions, be it in the vineyards from Fellbach to Uhlbach, or in the bustling Neckar valley, or the view to the Birkenkopf over the city centre of Stuttgart. The visit to the funeral chapel gives a retrospective of the history of the country, which stimulates reflection. The burial chapel is beautifully renovated and can also be visited without a guided tour. We agreed with our visit, a successful conclusion to the meeting.

  • The chapell it self is very plain inside, not as grand as you might expect. In fact, the walk up to the chapell is the main experience. You see wineyards that meet the city of Stuttgart, you see the v...  more »
  • Visit to the burial chapel on the Württemberg. Great views of the vineyards and Stuttgart, Esslingen and all the way to Ludwigsburg. Here you can relax. A visit inside the burial chapel is always worthwhile, even if it costs 4 € admission. The comparison and the name come from the reason for the construction of the building. In splendour it is not comparable to the Indian tomb. The burial chapel is very beautiful
