Wies Church, Steingaden
(4.8/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Wies Church became a pilgrimage site after the figure of the Scourged Savior began to weep tears in 1738. Local authorities converted a hasty chapel into a Rococo church in the late 1740s, hoping to make the supernatural visible. UNESCO recognized the church in 1983 as a World Heritage site. The setting, other attractions nearby, and the surprising size of this rural church make it worth the drive out here. • This church is a spectacularly beautiful. We enjoyed the beautiful drive, and our visit included freshly made cinnamon sugar "doughnut" hot and delicious.
  • It was a normal day in front of us an old Bulli which held in the parking lot before the Wieskirche. We have parked our car and went forth behind the many men who rose from the Bulli. The surprise came in the Wieskirche. At first, we were thrilled and impressed by this Baroque splendor. We have set ourselves the back benches for a few reflective minutes on one. The men from the Bulli went up before the altar, set himself and say old Russian Christian songs. It was us going cold down the back. We will never forget the acoustics and the absolutely fantastic performance. Thank you to the unknown men!

  • He appears in the books of architecture as an outstanding example of Rococo, near Füssen architecture and if you come from Munich to see castles is passing. We must deviate slightly from the route and in a totally rural landscape appears the Church, with a sober exterior, which contrasts with the inner splendor. Do not charge entry.

  • Absolutely stunning church! Stopped by on an early Friday morning en route to Linderhof Palace and found that we were the only car in the parking lot. This church is surrounded by bucolic fields of cows and working cattle dogs, which provided an amazing contrast to the opulent rococo decorations inside. Not to be missed!
  • The church is very beautiful, external and even more the interior. Worth the visit and sitting inside.
  • Impressive but very crowded, can't take pictures inside and you have to pay for parking. The other church in Steingaden, Welfenmünster, was just as impressive and when we went there was only a couple other people.
  • Pictures simply don't do it justice. The scale of the place is awe-inspiring. Schedule some time to take it all in, there are details everywhere. We visited on our way home from Zugspitze, in May. The weather was perfect, the pastures so lush and green, it's a great way to spend an afternoon.
  • This is definitely not to be missed! An awe inspiring piece of architecture and beauty. The price of admission is 0, and absolutely the most beautiful example of baroque-rococo church I have visited.
