Wies Church, Steingaden

#9 of 94 in Historic Sites in Upper Bavaria
Church Tourist Spot
Wies Church became a pilgrimage site after the figure of the Scourged Savior began to weep tears in 1738. Local authorities converted a hasty chapel into a Rococo church in the late 1740s, hoping to make the supernatural visible. UNESCO recognized the church in 1983 as a World Heritage site. The setting, other attractions nearby, and the surprising size of this rural church make it worth the drive out here. • Wow! Never expected such a masterpiece in the middle of the most picturesque setting. No town nearby, truly this church was built on faith. And the Frescas are absolutely fantastic! Must see  more »
  • A very non imposing church from the outside but absolutely amazing when you get inside. The only problem is that it is now such a tourist attraction there are quite literally bus loads of people going through it all the time. Kind of takes the gloss off the whole experience.
  • Perfect environment and cute place. But notice it cannot take photos in the church.
  • A beautiful church worth visiting. It can be hard to find.
  • Hold your breath before go inside, really impressive.
  • I just love to be here!!
