Speyer Cathedral, Speyer

4.6
An 11th-century cathedral, Speyer Cathedral is the largest Romanesque church in the world. Before entering this UNESCO World Heritage site, take in its red sandstone architecture. Inside, a series of colorful murals depicts the Life of the Virgin. A pamphlet and audio guide detail the cathedral's history. For a small fee, you can also visit the large crypt, the oldest part of the cathedral. A playground near the parking lot can help kids burn off energy before going inside. • This UNESCO world heritage listed building is a must, you have to pay entry for the crypt but it's worth it. There are plenty of features inside and out, we spent about an hour here.  more »
  • Largest Romanesque church in the world? I think I read that somewhere. In any case, this church is a mountain all by itself. On 31 May 1689 the French troops of Louis XIV broke in, pillaged the...  more »
  • This cathedral is beautiful and quite plain on the inside yet. The only colours are from the lights, some painted scenes and the different types of stones used to build the columns inside. The arches....  more »

  • Speyer cathedral is of historical and cultural significance. The audio guide from nearby office is highly recommended. There is also an interesting brochure with color photographs of important details, but the text is only in German. Actually, there are numerous churches in Speyer, often with completely different histories and architectural styles. Just as one example, the nearby-situated protestant church, Holy Trinity Church from the early 1700s (baroque style) has been newly restored, and is a gem. Many other churches too are worthy of viewing. I'm fact, Speyer itself is full of lovely architectural detail.
  • We enjoyed our visit to the Kaisersaal and the tower. Beautiful view over the city from the tower. If you plan to visit, I'd recommend visiting the near by Historical Museum of Speyer as well. Amazing exhibits.
  • A very simple yet impressive entrance to the cathedral. It's not a very much decorated church, but very effective. Enjoyed it very much.
  • It was under construction but still very beautiful. Definitely climb the tower and take a free guide mini tour, it's nice.
  • Stunning church with quiet, simple elegance with massive rooms. And quiet corners. A trip well worth the time and effort
