Schwerin Cathedral, Schwerin

(4.6/5 based on 170+ reviews on the web)
Seventy-six years in the making, Schwerin Cathedral was erected in 1248. A jewel thought to contain a drop of Christ's blood is displayed on the altar, leading thousands to make a pilgrimage here for many years. Although the foundation of the church was laid in the 13th century, many additions were added to the structure in the 15th century, including the nave and cloister. Schwerin Cathedral is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Schwerin Edition.

  • Approx. 220 tight spiral stairs are to climb to enjoy great views of city, priest pond and Castle from the tower. €2 for required are well spent. The large Gothic church room has also a lot to offer with its high Vault. Especially the two huge double - gravestones made of brass, which are something special with finely worked Gravourporträts of 4 bishops of the von Bülow of family from the 14th century have impressed.

  • The history of the cathedral is dramatic. From Napoleon using it as stable for his horses to the USSR soldiers during WWII. This and much more can be seen here.
  • The cathedral dominates the city center, making it impossible to miss. Going inside is free of charge (there is a small charge to climb the tower). The inside is very bright and airy due to the white ...  more »

  • Good architecture but for the size of it, too close to other buildings. Interesting interior. There are 220 steps leading up to the highest point of the tower (117.5 meters). It is really worth the effort when you can enjoy the stunning view of Schwerin and the nearby lakes._
  • I spend one month în Schwerin and i visit this cathedral and the castel of Mecklenburg . All is full of history and the building have great arhitecture .
  • A very nice, three-aisled Basilica of brick. One of the largest and bedeutensden buildings of the brick Gothic style in Northern Germany. The 120m high tower was completed in 1893.
