Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss), Schwerin

Set on an island in the lake Schweriner See, Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss)has undergone many renovations over the centuries and is now the seat of the local government. It also hosts an art museum that features seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings. The castle's roots date back to 1160, when Henry the Lion (Henry III) built a castle at this site. Later the dukes of Mecklenburgonce lived in the castle, which fell into disrepair when they moved out in 1765. A round of vast renovations kicked off in 1843. The German state took over the site in 1918. Later, fire damage set off another round of renovations. If you visit, keep an eye out for the Ghost of Petermännchen, said to be a very short man in 17th-century clothes. • This Renaissance style castle/palace was built between 1160-1857 and is situated on a small island in the city of Schwerin's main lake. It has been the residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg until 1918...  more »
  • The castle is located on an island. It has a cool architecture and nice surroundings with gardens and lawns. Well worth a visit if you are passing.

  • Located in the State capital Schwerin in Northern Germany Mecklenburg-Vorpommern attention, even the legislature the female sexuality. The Lake is located in the beautiful landscape around the castle is beautiful, and very good to walk in the garden. The Castle has been operating as a restaurant five simple food in Langeais. The lack of English-language description of some visitors inside the Castle, and it's a good idea to find the history of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern you see in advance.

  • I'm simply in love with that palace. It is so beautiful and made me feel the high culture and history. I recommend it to everyone!
  • Cool castle. Undergoing some renovations at the time. But some really cool collections and a lot of really interesting exhibits. Reasonable price and guides/staff throughout to explain the various rooms.
  • Beautiful and impressive castle. There was no English guided tour available but luckily we understand German, and it was very good. Unacceptable was that my Mastercard and Maestro didn't work, she said it was an "old machine". Had to walk 20 minutes to withdraw cash in town.
  • A beautiful castle. Best to visit in the summer. About the one good thing we found in Schwerin...
  • The tour of the castle itself isn't really worth the admission but I have been to other places more expensive and much less impressive. Construction could be the reason why I didn't see much. Not that they would drop the price. The surrounding gardens is nice. The town of schwerin is also charming. It's a worthwhile day trip from Hamburg.
