Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss), Schwerin

Set on an island in the lake Schweriner See, Schwerin Castle (Schweriner Schloss)has undergone many renovations over the centuries and is now the seat of the local government. It also hosts an art museum that features seventeenth-century Dutch and Flemish paintings. The castle's roots date back to 1160, when Henry the Lion (Henry III) built a castle at this site. Later the dukes of Mecklenburgonce lived in the castle, which fell into disrepair when they moved out in 1765. A round of vast renovations kicked off in 1843. The German state took over the site in 1918. Later, fire damage set off another round of renovations. If you visit, keep an eye out for the Ghost of Petermännchen, said to be a very short man in 17th-century clothes. • More of a art gallery, £8.50 pp to look at a few ornaments. Exterior of the building including the grounds is beautiful. However I would definitely not pay to go inside for the above reason.  more »
  • I've never been to a German castle, plenty of ruined castles in England, but never a beautiful fairytale German one and I was thrilled! This was really our whole reason for staying in Schwerin, and...  more »

  • I run out of words to describe how beautiful this place really is. The castle itself from the outside is an absolute Marvel and the surrounding Gardens I was such a pleasure to walk through no matter the weather. You can see the castle from a great distance away and it is a fantastic backdrop.
  • A fairy tale palace... Pretty sure Rapunzel lived in one of the towers... Must visit... You can visit a small part of the old duke's living quarters. ... The boat ride in the surrounding lake is also a must do.
  • This is a very beautiful castle in Schwerin. I loved it. Walking distance from the train station. We spent a lot of time walking inside, because castle converted to a museum. Beautiful garden along the river bank and there is a big garden also. Definitely worth visiting
  • Easy parking and spectacular exterior but a bit confusing inside. Its the local parliament building so isn't fully open to the public. Park and gardens are a nice walk, but it's not the neuschwanstein of the north. Still worth a visit though.
  • Amazing castle in Schwerin. Beautiful located on its own little island with close by parking. Enjoy a stroll around in the castle garden and surrounding areas.
