  • Rare to find perfectly preserved historic old towns and complete with ramparts and gates as in the middle ages. Schongau is a scheduled, applied by a 1225 staufen town. She came into the possession of the Bavarian Dukes in 1268. The dissolution of the nearby settlement of old town was founded. The market was moved to a more favorable strategic and diversified high ridge above an old Lech transition. Three main road axes and the side roads mapped at right angles formed the core city of the 13th century. The expansion of the city was gradually extended in the 14th and 15th centuries. The whole northern part of town between Bauer Gasse, Northern Münzstrasse and North Court Street and the smaller southern part to Linden square were closed consequently. Later, the city men included even the Castle and the Customs facility Northwest with the Maxtor. This is still clearly visible today in a bulge of the city ground plan at this point. The Bavarian Dukes were strongly attach especially the West side against the Swabia and Augsburg, Schongau. The fortifications of the city have been largely preserved. Bounding walls, a series of towers and two of the five ancient gates rise today over the outermost edges of the plateau. Worth a visit!

  • The pedestrian zone is very small and very quiet. Suitable for a small walk. Around the city a nice walk with some beautiful views.

  • The town is surrounded by the town walls and the old town is everything inside. Said so it looks like the place to be very nice, though the central square is open to traffic and parking. All vintage structures have been restored and their destination was changed. Visit Schongau has left me with a sense of unfinished ... to have a town worth visiting there were ... too bad.
