Runkel Castle, a ruined hill castle from the High Middle Ages, is located in the city of Runkel in the Landkreis Limburg-Weilburg in the state of Hesse, Germany.LocationNestled in the valley of the Lahn River, the town and castle are, in a straight line, 3.75mi east of Limburg an der Lahn, 18.6mi southwest of Wetzlar and 37mi northwest of Frankfurt am Main. The hill fort is situated at 492ft above sea level and rises about 115ft to 131ft above the valley of the Lahn.HistoryAs the hill had already attracted the attention of the Celts, it is probable they gave it its name: “Run – kall”, the Celtic word for “rock mountain”. In 1159, a Sigfridus de Runkel was mentioned in the documents but the castle was built a little earlier by a man with the same name, probably on the orders of the Holy Roman Emperor, perhaps Frederick Barbarossa, to protect the strategic pass between Weilburg and the southern side of the region. At the time of the castle was built, there was just a ferry. The bridge was not built until the Late Middle Ages.

  • A very nice Castle and an interesting private collection of old weapons. When you walk through the winding corridors of the keep which makes not only the children fun who feel little Princess or a Knight. It is also something for the historic interested Castle friend. The rifles are explained in a guided tour.

  • A beautiful castle which is well worth to visit it! The tower can be climbed. From there one has great views of the city and the Lahn with beautiful bridge.

  • A very interesting and beautiful castle with small museum and an interesting collection of old weapons. Hiking around in the narrow corridors of the keep makes not only children fun, but interested in the historical castle friend. To the extensive collection of weapons declarations on the basis of boards is desirable etc however.

  • Was positively surprised at how much there is to see at this castle. Took my visiting family there and they loved it.
  • Beautiful and very reasonably priced. Very well maintained and set up, gives you a real sense of what life must have been there centuries ago. A nice selection of artifacts.
  • Really nice castle with great views from the towers.
  • A very neat old fortress on the Lahn river.
  • So amazing to see a city named after my x6th great grandfather Herzlich Willkommen Runkel. Also to see our family castle still standing. Amazing beyond words.
