Niederwald Monument (Niederwalddenkmal), located in the landscaped park of the same name, commemorates the founding of the German Empire after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. Wilhelm I laid the monument's first stone on Sept. 16, 1871, and the complete structure measures 38 m (125 ft) tall. The monument depicts the ruler as well as army commanders and soldiers.
