Niederwald Monument (Niederwalddenkmal), located in the landscaped park of the same name, commemorates the founding of the German Empire after the end of the Franco-Prussian War. Wilhelm I laid the monument's first stone on Sept. 16, 1871, and the complete structure measures 38 m (125 ft) tall. The monument depicts the ruler as well as army commanders and soldiers.   • If your in the area i's worth your time to take a look and explore a little and absorb the the meaning of the place 
  • I walked to the monument from Rudesheim, it took approx one hour. This is well worth a visit, it is huge. There are good views back to Rudesheim and the Rhein, certainly worth the climb. There is a ca...  more »
