Toppler Castle, Rothenburg
(3.6/5 based on 20+ reviews on the web)
Get an intimate tour of a small medieval castle in the Tauber valley at Toppler Castle, once both the summer residence and defensive tower for the powerful Lord Mayor Heinrich Toppler. Built in 1388, the small medieval castle now houses furniture from the 16th to 19th centuries. To enter, ring the bell outside the property to alert the owner. Walk up the steep stairs to see the sitting room, kitchen, bedroom, and library, and to learn more about the structure's history. Take a minute to notice the gardens outside, which could be flooded in case of attacks. Check the website for hours. Make Toppler Castle a centerpiece of your Rothenburg vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Rothenburg vacation route planner.

  • This cute house is sadly closed indefinitely due to the owner's death per the Tourist Information Center. I am happy that I asked while I was there getting a map. I was however able to get some amazin...  more »
  • A building very curious because of the overlap of a "normal" House in a preexisting Tower, to form an Assembly completely out of the ordinary. We found always closed, although the hotel exactly ahead.

  • The castle is the residence of the significant Mayor of Rothenburg. Toppler has made to the city what it is today. The Interior shows a glimpse of in the earlier time and as the Mayor has lived. It is located beneath the city in the Tauber Valley and is well worth a visit.
