St. Jacob's Church (St. Jakobskirche), Rothenburg

Finally finished in 1484, St. Jacob's Church (St. Jakobskirche) took more than 150 years to build. This church contains the famous Holy Blood altarpiece of woodcarver Tilman Riemenschneider, with images of the Last Supper and other important biblical icons. Some stained-glass windows here date back to 1350, and the organ is impressive. Snag an audio guide for an explanation of the art and history or for a spiritual tour discussing the passion of Christ. This church has a connection as far west as Galicia, Spain, via the medieval pilgrimage route called the Way of St. James. • this is a very nice church with interesting altar carvings and stained glass. It is a good 25 minute visit. Expect simple; you will be disappointed if you expect the beauty and ornate churches of some...  more »
  • I was there for the second time on a tour through the Church. I recommend this also those who are not quite familiar with the Catholic Saints and not know the stories behind them! The jewels of the Church are altars, everybody feel special, carved by the great masters.

  • The church is a middleage gothic structure, pretty big considering the town where it is. The most remarkable thing to be appreciated, counting on a sunny day, is the set of painting on the big windows...  more »

  • A center peace of Rothenburg! a must see if in the city worth the small price it cost to get in. It is fun to see all the details behind the alter. Only bad thing is, there is no tour so you have to do a little research on you own.
  • The most characteristic church in Rothenburg ob der Tauber. A must-see place while paying a visit here.
  • If we come with the families in new towns or villages, church attendance is always. The churches tell us something of the history in the relevant place. But what is a no go. I pay monthly for my church and to pay another entry for praying. This is a bad joke. Now just stop, maintenance due to etc. enough taxes are collected in Germany. Abzocke high ten.

  • The bright spot on the romantic road, the end of Jacob's pilgrimage. Rumen Schneider's "Sacred Blood Altar" was displayed on the second floor, a key to uncover Rotenburg Bon.

  • Beautiful church, no question, but the alleged drop of the blood of Jesus, see little, or better if you don't know it you would not see smooth's... Into churches is very questionable for me...
