Spital Bastion, Rothenburg

4.7
#9 of 17 in Historic Sites in Rothenburg
A major medieval landmark in Rothenburg, Spital Bastion once represented a key part of the city's network of defensive fortifications. Constructed in the 1580s, the bastion stands on the site of a much earlier structure, which served a similar defensive purpose during the 13th century. The well-preserved fortification features an unusual design resembling a figure eight, with two courtyards and an adjacent moat. Explore the various gates and walkways, and look for the inscription over the main gate, which translates to, "Peace to those who enter, farewell to those who leave." • The most massive part of the wall. Although there constant car traffic through the gate. The resort itself offers peace pole. Photographically interesting. Also ascend to the wall tour.

  • One morning I decided a little early to go jogging when had not yet reached the bus of tourists to Rothemburg. On this tour I had opportunity to see all the doors to the historic centre of this beautiful city. The Spital, in the southern part, is by far the most beautiful and impressive of all. It is a bastion with circular-shaped that, a first door you access to a patio and a second to the city. The walls of the bastion rises around the courtyard. You can also visit inside. I thought it was an imposing building and no doubt I recommend you get to know this amazing place.

  • The Spital gate is the last and strongest of all the bastions of the fortifications of the city. There is the inscription "Pax intrantibus, salus exeuntibus", which means: "Peace for those who enter, good health for those who stray. Built in the form of a number eight in 16 century, this impressive fortification was work of Leonhard Weidmann. You can walk in the defensive walls of the complex, consisting of seven gates, a portcullis, a drawbridge and a ledge where you could use cannons that protected Rothenburg of attacks.
