Rodertor, Rothenburg

4.3
#5 of 17 in Historic Sites in Rothenburg
For sweeping views across Rothenburg, climb to the top of Rodertor, part of the old city gate. Most visitors come to this town to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of bygone medieval days, and this structure draws big crowds with its 360-degree panorama, especially popular at sunset. Centuries ago the city executioner lived in this neighborhood and carried out harsh sentences in the moat just below the tower. Partially destroyed during World War II, the meticulously restored tower now serves as a romantic entrance into the city. Follow the medieval town wall, and don't forget to bring your camera. This is a very nice gate where one can get some very good photos, there is a small section of the moat, with water still in it, and there are stairs leading up to the wall. There are several good phot...  more »

Offers a beautiful view of the old town and the surrounding countryside of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. The Rödertor Gate is unmistakable, with two turrets pointed roofs flanking the access to the tower. The Tower Röder is 13 century. In addition to the town hall tower (Rathausturm), she is the only affordable Tower in the city. Began to be visited in April 2017, every Saturday and Sunday, 11:00 at 4:00 pm. Input: €1.50 adults and €1 children.

  • Very close to castle. Very clean and big rooms. This is a lovely place to stay.
  • The Rödertor (Roeder Gate) with it's two customs and watch huts with their pointed roofs. These flank the outer gate and the bailey. Above you can see the top of the Roeder tower (Röderturm). It is one of the only a few towers that is open to the public.
  • Amazing local food with a great home german town feel. The staff were really friendly and the food was great!
  • A complete disappointment!!!! We visited Rothenburg last month and i specifically went on trip advisor to review restaurants as we were only visiting for 2nights and i wanted a special restaurant; this place seemed to rate highly especially for the 'potato dishes'. On the first evening we sat in the side beergarden and ordered a beer, what looked like the landlady came and started sweeping the debris with a brush from the tables, she didn't acknowledge, or even make any form of apology even when almost banging into our chairs. We decided to move inside and started to look for a table, the waitress, who looked like the head one, with a face that a very strict headmistress would be proud of, shook her head when we pointed to one and marched us to one by the door. As we had been travelling all day, otherwise we would have walked out there and then, and the food had been recommended by tripadvisor, we decided just to order our food. My husband had steak and chips, about 24euros and had a sauce, another 4euros, he said the steak was very good, it should have been for the price, there were very few chips and bearing in mind the sauce was extra this was a bit pricey. I decided to order one of their special 'potato dishes', a lot of them were dauphonise and had mozzarella in them. I know from experience you have to be very careful in cooking mozzarella, it ends up like chewing gum if you overcook it, but seeing as this was an expertise potato restaurant i thought they would know. It was inedible, i had to eat around the cheese, i should have made a complaint, the staff never once came over to ask how everything was, they didn't try to make any conservation even when we ordered 2 more drinks and were unsmiling, unfriendly, in fact disgraceful service. Another older couple had ordered the potato pizza, it looked dry and i could see they were struggling to eat it. I would never recommend this restaurant to anyone either on food or service. Please do not waste your money in going to it.
  • Very good food - the raw dumplings are the best. Turkey cream schnitzel are divine.
