Criminal Medieval Museum, Rothenburg

(4.1/5 based on 950+ reviews on the web)
If you're curious about ancient punishment and torture, you'll want to stop by Criminal Medieval Museum. Four floors with more than 130 displays reveal the history of European law and punishment, starting with the medieval period. Be aware that the exhibits explaining the penalties that were meted out during this time might make you squeamish. The sections that focus on the development of German law are especially interesting. A guided tour will help you go even more in-depth. Many aspects of the museum may not be suitable for children--or the faint of heart. • A great experience when you can enjoy old tomes of inestimable value, a very well-built and designed exhibition to 1,000 years of European judicial history. We were there and the current exhibition "Luther and the witches" is superbly documented and does away with many, sometimes extreme prejudice. If you then want is lucky that the "boss" personally directs the Fürhung, even two hours are not enough, because you vanish in no time. Very very happy again.

  • Cool to see how the old crime&punishment happened. Your teens, who are already tired of looking at old buildings, precious art, and the relaxing German countryside, will thank you. They can take pictu...  more »
  • A Museum of torture and crime... in short, they were still a little twisted in the remote ages.

  • The museum does provide museum hunters a glimpse into what we seldom thought about - life, law and punishments in medieval periods. However if you are not a keen visitors of museums and just looking for impressive displays to take a photo, you could just take photos with the pillory on the outside and skip the museum totally. Having said that, I personally found the experience gratifying, improving my ignorance on life in the past and feeling more grateful of my comparatively better modern life.
  • I expected it to be more interesting and interactive. The money spent for the ticket (7euros) wasn't worth it. Most of it was in German and so we couldn't understand a lot of it. As it was suggested visit in TripAdvisor I expected it to be translated to English.
  • It's an interesting museum with a good selection of medieval torture and shame devices. There are good bilingual descriptions of the items.
  • Very depressing but also informative. Little under half is in english, but there is still way too much to read. Lots of repeats on the exhibits, but there are only so many different devices that exist. Tons of text material if you like to read for hours.
  • Really entertaining. Perfect for learning, eye-opening
