Burgtor und Burg, Rothenburg

(90 reviews on the web)
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Built in 1356 after the castle of Rothenburg was destroyed, Burgtor und Burg served as the city's main gate and fortification. Notice the smaller door hidden within the larger gate: this allowed a single person to pass through without opening the entire gate, thus protecting the city from possible attack. Also look for the mask face near the top of the gate, a spot into which hot tar was poured through and onto enemies. The coat of arms of both the city and the empire adorn the wood. A visit to Burgtor und Burg represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Rothenburg itinerary builder to plot your vacation.
