Burgtor und Burg, Rothenburg
(4.6/5 based on 80+ reviews on the web)
Built in 1356 after the castle of Rothenburg was destroyed, Burgtor und Burg served as the city's main gate and fortification. Notice the smaller door hidden within the larger gate: this allowed a single person to pass through without opening the entire gate, thus protecting the city from possible attack. Also look for the mask face near the top of the gate, a spot into which hot tar was poured through and onto enemies. The coat of arms of both the city and the empire adorn the wood. A visit to Burgtor und Burg represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Rothenburg itinerary builder to plot your vacation.

  • This double gate is one a several in town but is impressive in its own right. It leads to where the castle once sat and you can only imagine what it must have been like. Only one building from the cas...  more »
  • The city is not greater than that you can see most of this if you add a half-or full-day here. So is this something you should not miss. Beautifully. An attraction that can be recommended.
