Porta Praetoria Reviews

This is the remains of a gate, which was part of a Roman fort built around 2000 years ago. This is the only Roman gate left, which is located in the North of the Alps. more »

Regensburg owes its origins to the Romans, founded on the banks of the river Regen from which it takes its name in 179 ad. The porta Pretoria and the remains of part of the ancient walls are the most important of the Roman period in Regensburg. To see.View original -

It is all that remains of the ancient Roman settlement. Not much to see, but it's definitely an important historical witness: together with the Porta Nigra in Trier is the only still existing beyond the Alps.View original

An interesting if mundane piece of European history, rare because of its age and location, with little of the original structure remaining. Still, a fun way to be connected to the past, and see a fusion of ancient history and modern architecture.

Amazing piece of Old Rome!

Not impressive but interesting

Not very impressive remains of a Roman city gate. In addition to the larger Porta nigra in Trier, it should be the only surviving Roman gate North of the Alps. Since the renovation in the year 2017, it is possible to enter also the Interior of the door system in the framework of guided tours. From the outside it looks rather modest.View original
