Altstadt Quedlinburg, part of the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the best-preserved medieval and Renaissance towns in Europe and spans 80 hectares (198 acres). Stroll through the cobbled streets to admire the 1,200 half-timbered buildings from the 14th to 20th century. Visit the Church of St. Servatius, considered to be a Romanesque architectural masterpiece, where you can see the graves of the first German King, King Henry I, and his wife, Mathilde. The view of the town from the church is superb, so bring your camera along.   • The old town is beautifully restored and absolutely worth seeing. Different guided tours are offered. A visit to the Blasiikirche is worthwhile!

  • The city is not for nothing a world cultural heritage. Where one has it yet, that a medieval town centre is so well preserved because the city never was destroyed by a fire, or a war. Only a pity that the 30 years ago only 16 000 inhabit the city still 40 000 inhabitants, which is why many reconstructed houses sit vacant. A must-see: a guided tour with the night watchman. He knows so many details and history can be found in any travel guide...
