The Protestant Church of Peace (Friedenskirche) is situated in the Marly Gardens on the Green Fence (Am Grünen Gitter) in the palace grounds of Sanssouci Park in Potsdam, Germany. The church was built according to the wishes and with the close involvement of the artistically gifted King Frederick William IV and designed by the court architect, Ludwig Persius. After Persius' death in 1845, the architect Friedrich August Stüler was charged with continuing his work. Building included work by Ferdinand von Arnim and also. The church is located in the area covered by the UNESCO World Heritage Site Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin. The cornerstone of the churchhouse was laid on April 14, 1845. The building was dedicated on September 24, 1848, though construction continued until 1854. The structure resembles a High Medieval Italian monastery. The Church of PeaceFrederick William himself made the original sketches on which the design was to be based. He gave his court architect Ludwig Persius two main instructions: The church was to derive in form and size from the early Christian Basilica di San Clemente in Rome. And it had to accommodate the apse mosaic from the church San Cipriano on the island of Murano in the Venetian Lagoon, which Frederick William had purchased in 1834 when that church was scheduled for demolishment. A popular etching of the early Christian version of the Basilica di San Clemente in Rome made by and probably inspired the design of the Potsdam church.

  • The Church in Sanssouci park entrance, on your right. Clean corridor. Organ concerts in the Church than it seems. When you visit just made organ playing was impressive.

  • beautiful and interesting. Is dependent on the interests of course. It is recommended in Potsdam to look at everything all around. Easily accessible (no long trips). A historically beautiful city (all - everything back top restored). Much seems even fairytale, with the different styles of Castle and historic buildings.

  • The Church is built on a river at the end of the 18th century for the members of the Huguenot colony. Pretty cloister, mosaic in the apse, prostration Murano of Frédéric III and his wife. Enter through the small gate located on Am Grünen Gitter.

  • This is a Protestand church in the Park Sanssouci, City bus reach the east edge of the park, walk several minutes to get there. When we went there, the church is under renovation, only can view the exterior.
  • The church of peace is a wonderful building with a great presence. You can enter the chapel with a donation and go down and see the crypt where some history was made.
  • Church constructed to resemble one you would find in Italy, with a great cloister courtyard and other interesting details. The interior is quite relaxing. You can also go into the crypt. The best parts are the exteriors, with all sorts of relics embedded in the walls.
  • Intersting architecture style in the north of Europe! Nice!
  • One of the highlights of the park for me. Great architecture.
