Stadt Passau, Altes Rathaus, Passau

4.4
#2 of 9 in Historic Sites in Passau
Historic Site Tourist Spot
Dating from the 14th century, Stadt Passau, Altes Rathaus is one of Passau's most impressive and historic sites--and home to Bavaria's largest glockenspiel clock. Set on the town square, the ornate and intricate Neo-Gothic architecture is a sight to behold. Paintings depicting local legends and semi-historical scenes lavishly decorated the interior walls. Keep an eye out for marks on the side of the building, which depict the heights and dates of the various floods that have inundated the town throughout its history. • Outside the Altes Rathaus are the High Water Marks showing the floods across the ages - very interesting and amazing it's a way of life here. The Rathaus Platz is also quaint.  more »
  • The ancient city of Passau is a nice building, but simple that stands out on the rest of the city mainly for its magnificent Tower. To my personally and bridging the gap (not I laugh of my) reminded me in some details to the Duomo of Florence. Another curious fact of the city is that it has marked levels to those who have reached some of the floods that have ravaged the city over the years, since Passau is located at the point of confluence of 3 rivers: the Danube, the Inn and the Ilz.

  • I had a wonderful opportunity to sing as member of the Stellenbosch University Choir, South Africa, to perform a concert in this magnificent builing on 24/6/1979. Fondest memories of this beautiful Rathaus, roof paintings and lovely Passau. Would like to visit again!
  • The Town Hall in Passau is located near the piers of Donau.Bei flood the beautiful building is exposed every time in jeopardy, and the flooding. We made a visit to City Hall and a city tour. It is worth to visit the Town Hall. The tour was also very educational for us. We have seen how the flood has left its mark. In addition, we had seen during a visit that one the benches near the Town Hall and the investors make no longer could use, because they were already in the water. Every time you get scared, to experience a renewed flood. The information Office and the premises next to the Town Hall were flooded then also later in the day. It is a pity, the water masses with the masonry to do everything. It is a beautiful town with winding streets and Gassen.Die town centre has been slightly increases applied by the river and fortunately also therefore not flooded. The excursion boats for tours or even River Cruises depart from the docks. It is there plenty to see. The ships are cleaned for their trips and newly loaded with supplies. It is interesting to observe the hustle and bustle of the benches at the Town Hall square and the banks. Already Empress Sissy has stayed at the hotel wild man, next to the Town Hall. With this name there is also a small ship for tours is located on the Donau.Passau is a beautiful city and one should look at necessarily it, if one is nearby. There are countless restaurants and Caffees to stay to find always the suitable for all budgets.
