St. Sebaldus Church, Nuremberg

4.5
#7 of 15 in Historic Sites in Nuremberg
The location of St. Sebaldus Church in front of the Albrecht-Dürer-Platz is evidence of its central role in city's culture. One of the oldest and most important houses of worship in the region, it takes its name from Sebaldus, a hermit and missionary from the eighth century. The structure was originally a Romanesque basilica, but in the ensuing centuries, the aisles have been made wider and the steeples higher. Much of what you see inside was restored after World War II's bombing damage. However, the stained glass windows, the Shrine of St. Sebaldus, and the organs survived, so you can still enjoy the epic reverberation of the organ's 15th-century pipes. A beautiful church (reconstructed), early and late Gothic with two choirs. At the tour of the church you see on each pillar a picture of the devastation and a reference to the germs of the war that the Nazis have thrown around into people's heart.

Although it is a tad more removed than the other two, this is the most important Church of the city. Although partly reconstructed, like almost everything in this city, preserves Romanesque and Gothic parts that give a unique atmosphere. Surprisingly, the height of their ships and, at the same time, the character of gathering, transmitting. Admission is donation, and I ended up by buying me a book at the store to study more thoroughly the architecture and decorations. Next to the castle is what I would not lose the city.

The massive cathedral was partially destroyed during the war. But it is home to beautiful works of art including the hunting of St Sebald, a marvel of silver! I'm staying 20 minutes to observe every detail. Very nice modern organ that I would have liked to hear, on the coast in one of the side aisles.

Beautiful church that was mostly rebuilt after World War II. Tour it for a look at the preserved stained glass windows, historic pictures of its destruction and reconstruction, and beautiful vaulted ceilings.

Where to stay in Nuremberg

The Altstadt and the Egidienviertel districts, the city's historical sections, provide an array of guesthouses and hotels. An alternative is the Gostenhof area, a suburban region with a selection of tourist sites. If you stay in Gostenhof, however, you need to take public transportation to the city center. For local flair, consider staying in the Knoblauchsland district near the Hauptmarkt. Avoid the Südstadt district near the train station, which is mainly residential and doesn't offer many entertainment options or access to sites.
