Schloss Nordkirchen, Nordkirchen

Schloss Nordkirchen is a palace situated in the town of Nordkirchen in the Coesfeld administrative district in the state of North Rhine Westphalia, Germany. The schloss was largely built between 1703 and 1734 and is known as the "Versailles of Westphalia" since it is the largest of the fully or partly moated Wasserschlösser in that region. It was originally one of the residences of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster.OwnershipThe present Baroque schloss is the successor to a fully moated Wasserschloss built in the sixteenth century for the noble "von Morrien" family. In the eighteenth century, the structure visible today was raised in several building campaigns for Fürstbischof Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg zu Lenhausen and his successor, Fürstbischof Ferdinand von Plettenberg. In 1833, the complex passed to Count von Esterházy who sold it to Duke Engelbert Marie von Arenberg in 1903. In 1933, the Arenberg-Nordkirchen GmbH, a newly founded ducal assets management company, assumed possession. In 1959, the schloss was purchased by the State of Nordrhein-Westfalen and has since been the site of "Fachhochschule für Finanzen Nordrhein-Westfalen", a state-run college specializing in the training of future tax inspectors. The neighboring "Oranienburg" complex and the park were subsequently added, as was – in 2004 – the deer park, which included a generous green belt of more than 1,000 hectares of woodland surrounding the south-western perimeter of the schloss proper. Parts of the interior of the schloss are open to the public, as are the parterres and the surrounding park. Inside the schloss, an up-market restaurant offering Westphalian cuisine looks out into the large formal garden that faces the northern façade of the schloss. The schloss chapel may be rented for weddings.

  • Whether they do a photo shoot, marry or just walk to... Nordkirchen is always a trip. The Westphalian Versailles offers every season a different charm... only drawback; good dining options unfortunately further away.

  • The great complex of the Castle and the adjoining gardens suitable for a relaxing stroll. More appropriate is probably going to pass the whole area on the wheels. The Castle serves as a University. The tour is possible upon prior reservation.

  • It is a castle in a castle in Germany among newspapers of local attractions and leisure vote by 10 or 15 election chosen well. It is a symmetrical Castle personally designed in the Münster bishopric is said "Münsterland" around here in the 18th century, nephew of the Bishop of Münster – a huge heritage of buildings and beautiful architecture. Garden is in the geometric garden. Time to walk from the parking lot and got ikegawa, blowing up fountain. Maybe I like every hour. From ikegawa angle is from the opposite side of the front triangle is a good angle. Because only a guide tour of the castle in time, did not see Guide time 1:00 3:00 5:00 was. But green garden grows at just outside the castle of red brick, clean. University of Economics in the Castle. In front of restaurant, staff also coffee drink. Is the perfect menu I ordered though our meals, Alsace, asked Germany's Pizza flamkuchen, classic, lunch, etc. Think it's hard on the car, but from Dusseldorf is less than 2 hours away by car.

  • Visited during autumn. It was a beautiful place. Ideal for a picnic or a short visit when the sun is out.
  • The Versailles of Germany. Beautiful buildings and garden which can be visited only on selected days. Interesting church and rooms.
  • An amazing German Chateau with great gardens, but you cannot go inside.
  • A very beautiful spot both in winter and summer
  • Looks great outside. You can see inside the castle if you reserve a guide in advance. Pictures and decorations inside are great as well.
