Architectural Building Castle
Rumored to be the inspiration for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Burg Frankenstein holds a lot of stories and history within its walls. Hike up from the center of town to take a look inside this ancient castle, or go for a walk in the surrounding woods. Every Sunday, a knowledgeable writer offers a free tour of the castle to explain the history and legends and answer any questions. German-speakers can book a "horror banquet," an interactive theatrical experience. Around Halloween, the castle is transformed into a haunted house. • Good to visit only during Oct where they have the Halloween gouls running around the castle. The ruins are generally quieter on the rest of the other months, and entrance is Free. Next to the castle is the cafe, where you can chill out & enjoy the scenery.
  • Loved how easy this was to find and the parking lot right at the castle. Lovely ruins that you could wander around at will with views overlooking nearby Darmstadt. Definitely something a little eerie but cool about the place. Walking trail also available.
  • This was such an enchanting experience. When we arrived we were the only tourists. It was mid-winter so everything was frosted over. It was so incredible to explore this sight alone and in such a wonderful setting. I would absolutely recommend stopping here if you are traveling in the area.
  • Nice place and good views, good for a hike or to ride your bike. But cars can also get to the top, so it may be crowded some times
  • Halloween at Burg Frankenstein runs on weekends during October, usually through the first weekend of November. Zombies, werewolves and other monsters wonder the castle grounds while you walk through. Unlike Halloween Haunt events in America these creatures are allowed to touch you so be prepared! It's most fun in a small group. You park about 15 minutes away (or take the train) and a free shuttle bus takes you to the castle. Fest style themed food and Drink are available on site and it's always busy. Tickets are available online and do sell out. The VIP experience is expensive but includes a buffet and place to sit down. Families are encouraged to go on Sunday. Friday and Saturday and adult oriented.
