Burg Frankenstein, Nieder-Beerbach

3.6
Rumored to be the inspiration for Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Burg Frankenstein holds a lot of stories and history within its walls. Hike up from the center of town to take a look inside this ancient castle, or go for a walk in the surrounding woods. Every Sunday, a knowledgeable writer offers a free tour of the castle to explain the history and legends and answer any questions. German-speakers can book a "horror banquet," an interactive theatrical experience. Around Halloween, the castle is transformed into a haunted house. • Don’t come there, waste of time. After we bought train tickets (quite expansive 50 eu) and hiked up the hill we found out it’s closed because of stupid Halloween event. Very comercial stuff. There is ...  more »
  • I came here as a child, and was looking forward to visiting again. The trek up from the Straussenbahn was alot longer this time, but worth it. It was really nice, and I was with people dear to me, so ...  more »
  • The structure, partly ruined, is still well maintained. Small size becomes characteristic with snow.

  • Enjoyed the restaurant! The staff was so friendly, and they have Frankenstein-themed cocktails. It's a bit of a fancier restaurant than we expected for the top of the castle, but we enjoyed it very much.
  • Really nice view. You can even see the Frankfurt City Skyline from the tower. Is a longer trip worth? Don't think so, as there isn't really much else to do and see apart from a nice small castle. If it's on your route anyways or if you like to hike steep forrest paths, it could be worth a visit.
  • This was one of THE most amazing places to see in Germany. The history of the castle and the ability to actually walk through and tour the site was well worth it. Bused in to the site, employees dressed up for the Halloween event and more than half the customers as well. Many items for purchase at reasonable prices. Including foods, alcohol and regular beverages. Personnel were very fun and spirited. Family oriented. A definite must see.
  • The admission is €1 and you are free to walk around the ruins. There are food and beverages available but this sight is non-commercial and is a true tresure for the quiet calm visitors enjoying views and forest walks.
  • Very nice views! You can see Frankfurt in the distance. The castle itself is free to visit, although there's a suggested donation of €1. The opening times on Google are for the restaurant here, but the castle itself seems to be open often. There's also a small war memorial at this site, as well as lots of walking routes
