Angel of Peace (Friedensengel), Munich

4.3
#101 of 333 in Things to do in Munich
An elegant monument perched on the banks of the Isar River, Angel of Peace (Friedensengel) was built to commemorate the 25 years of peace following the end of the Franco-Prussian war in 1871. The monument and its small temple show the portraits of several German emperors and notable figures in Bavarian history, including Chancellor Otto von Bismarck and General Helmuth von Moltke. The temple's interior is decorated with golden mosaics depicting the allegories of war and peace. The statue of the angel sits atop a 38 m (125 ft) Corinthian column, below which is a large fountain with dolphin-shaped waterspouts. For unobstructed view of the surrounding area, take one of two monumental staircases leading to an observation deck at the foot of the column. • The Angel of peace is part of the peace monument on the Eastern Bank of the ISAR. Alone the way worth the Prince Regent str and Luitpoldbrücke. Beautiful views...

  • This angel of peace, though very similar to that found in Berlin, not commemorating the victory of the Prussian Empire on Denmark, but 25 years of peace after the end of that war. We we encounter with the while took a walk bike along the banks of the Isar River Road Garden English. I found a nice site that is worth knowing.

  • A beautiful monument to visit and reflect on as you walk through the gardens and overlook the city.
  • Nice monument to visit during walk along the river.
  • Beautiful spot on a nice day, sculptures are unique.
  • The walk to this area was very nice. We were able to walk through a bit of the underground pass to get to it which has a lot of nice graffitti art. When you get to the angel of peace it is very nice to look at and take some photos. Worth it to visit if it's along your route.
  • Nice monument which is lit up nicely in the evening hours. Good day and night photo shots
