Prinzipalmarkt, Muenster

Always abuzz with people, Prinzipalmarkt is in the vibrant center of the city. The main marketplace of the region for centuries, this site was largely destroyed during World War II. Reconstructed in the 1950s, the marketplace is shaped by the surrounding buildings with picturesque pediments attached to one another. Dominated by the historic city hall, the marketplace attracts both locals and tourists with its impressive selection of shops, cafes, and restaurants. You can stop by to take photos of some of the city's main architectural landmarks, spend a few hours window-shopping, or take in a light meal and watch the world go by. • On the principal market with its magnificent townhouses can be reached the market - St. Lamberti Church and the Town Hall in arcades with the Hall of peace. On my travel site toeightycountries.com find out more about Münster.

  • The square in the center of the city is surrounded by the historical houses of ancient merchants. From 1280 the row of houses with Gables and arcades are the oldest market Street in Münster. It's late or Renaissance, porticoed Gothic palaces in the lower part. The houses were destroyed during the second world war and subsequently reconstructed following faithfully the characteristics of the original facades. Include the Town Hall and stadweinhaus, done building the year 1615 that highlights the pediment of the late Renaissance period, were here installed the city weighing and inventory of wine on which the municipal Council had the monopoly. In this historic area of Münster is a unique commercial world. Elegant stores, exquisite fashion shops, filled with style, traditional Jewelers and cozy antique shops accessories, elegant designs are presented stylishly in the Prinzipalmarkt. You can enjoy the pedestrian area and its pleasant streets, visiting the stores that are there. Libraries, stores of exquisite taste or arcades of Münster, the modern Mall in the middle of the old city are waiting for you. This is the ideal place to continue browsing or take a break, either to enjoy the scene at one of the many cafes or to regain energy with an aperitif in a typical Tavern of this region of Westphalia.

  • I really enjoyed walking around Prinzipalmarkt... As a Canadian tourist, it was very fun getting to know another country's shopping district. Not to mention the very medieval vibe... With cobblestone streets, skeletal stone structures and an overall Gothic feel. A highly recommended visit !
  • its alright , people watching , anthropology , sociology , architecture and high end shopping..
  • Basically the Munster's parlor. Handsome at first glance. Unfortunately now completely dominated by any particular international retail chains. Hardly any individual shops. Traditional businesses shut peu a peu. Sad.
