Burg Meersburg Castle, Meersburg (Bodensee)
(4.5/5 based on 400+ reviews on the web)
Though much of Burg Meersburg Castle, the oldest inhabited castle in Germany, is occupied by the descendants of Carl Mayer von Mayerfels, more than 30 decorated rooms are open to the public. Discover what the fortress would have looked like in the Middle Ages as you wander through the armory, bathhouse, kitchen, knights' hall, and dungeon. Important German poet Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lived here from 1841 to 1848, and you can see her living quarters and the room where she died. The tour includes access to one of the castle's towers with views of the Lower City and surrounding area. End your visit with a cup of coffee and a sweet from the onsite cafe in a grand Baroque hall. Guided tours are available in German. Audio guides are available in English. Put Burg Meersburg Castle and other Meersburg (Bodensee) attractions into our Meersburg (Bodensee) vacation planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • The castle is very authentic, which is rare. Large number of rooms open to visits. The 1€ booklet is necessary for non-german speakers. We were alone visiting the castle on that day, we got a kind of ...  more »
  • We were on the last day of our Lake Constance short holiday with friends on a trip to Meersburg. When walking through the city, we decided spontaneously even the Castle enddeckt and us, also to visit them, wa is worthwhile in any case. The tour shows much of the history of the Castle. The exhibition is very nice. And from some other places it has great views of the lake or the city. Absolutely worthwhile. And for us as geocachers there was even a "best-kept" Geocache at the entrance then finally :-)

  • Well-preserved building. Even year-round inhabited. Also a free guided tour of the tower is included with the admission ticket. One has a wonderful view from the Castle. Worthwhile to visit. Only the entrance fee 12 euro per adult person is quite high.

  • Small but very interesting keep (or castle?). The entry price is included in the some ship tickets. Different rooms with various information on the Jeep's life.
  • Beautiful caste with spots that have a great view across the Bodensee. Option to walk by yourself or take a guided tour.
  • I was in Germany for a month and I saw everything while I was there but this castle was the best place I went. My breath was taken away. On top of it being so full of rich history, it is the only castle that I went to (I went to 7) that let you walk through the entire building. It was really great to be able to see the whole place like it was intended to be seen. I love this museum.
