Genoveva Castle (Genovevaburg), Mayen

(4.7/5 based on 20+ reviews on the web)
Incorporated into medieval town fortifications, the castle of Genovevaburg stands on the southwestern side of Mayen in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The castle is the symbol of Mayen and has been rebuilt several times since first being destroyed in 1689. Its name comes from a legend, according to which the seats of counts palatine, Siegfried and his wife, Genevieve of Brabant (German: Genoveva), were supposed to be on the same hill in (or above) Mayen. The earliest references linking the legend to this region date to the 17th century. Since when the castle and its bergfried, the so-called Golo Tower (Goloturm), have been linked to the legend is unknown.Literature Fridolin Hörter: Die kurfürstliche Burg und das Landschaftsmuseum in Mayen . 1st edn., Gesellschaft für Buchdruck, Neuss, 1980, ISBN 3-88094-322-2. • Actually we wanted to see only the Castle, and we found next to a nice coffee-restaurant of a beautiful Eifel Museum. The Museum is divided into various categories, offering information and animations in each Department for big and small

  • The Genovevaburg is one of the landmarks of the city of Mayen, and is situated on a cliff top above the market square. The Eifel Museum with German Slate mine is located under the Castle. The Herz-Jesu-Kirche was during the period 1911-1912 built with its two towers, as well as included the St. Clemens church with the twisted Tower as well as the many gates in the medieval city fortification. The market place with many shopping invite you to snap at the old town hall. A wonderful historic half-timbered House is located in a side street of the pedestrian area, that is home to a goldsmith workshop. Visit the city of Mayen, with the many sights was a great excursion for our family, for all to recommend that want to learn more about our home. Our home is so beautiful!
