Maulbronn Monastery, Maulbronn

One of Europe's best-preserved and most complete monastery complexes, Maulbronn Monastery features an intriguing combination of architectural styles. Founded in 1147 under the first Cistercian pope, the complex's cloister represents one of the first uses of Gothic design in the German-speaking world. Enclosed by medieval walls and towers, some of the highlights include the cloister, the Romanesque monastery church, and the fountain house. Learn about the Cistercians' way of life and religion through the history of this monastery and UNESCO World Heritage Site. • We visited the abbey on a cold and rainy December day on which there were barely any tourists there. The experience was awe-inspiring: huge empty spaces immersed in complete silence. The buildings sur...  more »
  • We were with a 13-member group to visit in Maulbronn and got a very interesting tour with many tales of the middle ages. A small circular walk around the food system to the nearby Lake with Paddle boats is recommended after that.

  • This was a really fantastic experience. We opted for an English language audio tour, which was perfect because it gave us the history while allowing us to move at our own pace. The audio tour is very informative and gives you options to "learn more" about various subjects. The Monastery itself is spectacular. I think it's well worth a day trip (though I don't think it would take most people a whole day to explore, we detoured and spent an afternoon there while driving somewhere else).
  • Coming with a group on a guided tour was worth it. I am not sure how much you get to see if you are on your own. Our tour guid made the visit very interesting and managed to give us an intreaging sneak peek into the past.
  • Very nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. The place is really well preserved and the staff very nice.
  • One step across the street and you're in middle ages...
  • Really wonderful monastery!
