St. Stephan's Church (Stephanskirche)
Originally built in the year 990 on the order of Archbishop Willigis, St. Stephan's Church (Stephanskirche) now features Marc Chagall-designed stained-glass choir windows. Created in the late 1970s through 1985, the windows depict of Bible scenes. You'll find nothing else quite like them in Germany. This structure offers a counterpoint to the Mainz Cathedral, which Willigis also had constructed. Few intentional changes have been made to this church since the 14th century. However, it required extensive rebuilding after World War II bombing. Plan my day in Mainz using traveler tips and tourist information provided by Inspirock.

We stopped in to see the stained glass while walking around Mainz, and it was well worth our time. The windows are beautiful - we went mid afternoon when there was plenty of sun.

The architecture of the church is nothing out of the ordinary, but what stuns the visitor is the welcoming and relaxing blue light pervading the whole building. Simple but unique in its kind.

Did a walking tour of the city center and the guide mentioned the Chagall windows in this church kind of as an aside. After the tour I asked how far the church was. She said it was 10-15 min. away..... more

Hidden gem of Mainz! I have been outside in the church cloistered courtyard, which is relatively small but very beautiful and picturesque, many times, however this was my first time inside the church and I was really impressed. I had no idea there was such a beautiful church in Mainz! This place is known for its unique stained-glass windows in luminous blue that were created by Marc Chagall. The light coming through the windows was absolutely stunning and created an almost unreal ambience, I felt like being under water. I have never seen such beautiful lighting in any church I have visited (visited mid-day with clear skies, so nothing was blocking the sun beams to enter the church). I also enjoyed the beautiful modern Organs near the chancel with the altar. There is a little gift shop inside, where you can buy souvenirs like postcards, books and magnets mainly with the blue window theme. Church is wheel-chair accessible and there is no entrance fee. Totally recommend to visit this church as pictures don't really do justice, you must see it with your own eyes to have the full experience. Visited in May 2022.

There're many Stained glass of Chagall. So impressive and so calm place, easy to get there from Dom on foot. The garden also beautiful!! It's free, so I bought some post cards as donation.
-
Beautiful early 10th century Church with courtyard. The real attraction are the Chagal windows, a fantastic deep cool blue in colour which goes back to post war Germany and is one of the only examples.
-
Interesting church with beautiful stained glass windows designed by the famous Marc Chagall.
-
Lovely church. The blue windows are a one time church experience. I've never seen such beautiful windows and color in any church. The photos doesn't show the beauty though. I tried my best to take realistic photos but it wasn't possible..
