  • Historians still argue about whether there really once vishnevyj sad or if it's some sort of allegory. What it is known for certain is that in the 13th century on the site of the square Kirschgarten (Cherry Orchard in translation) was the city hospital with miraculous water source-Brook. This Creek was named by the locals "the birth of cherries." Eventually disappeared and the hospital, and a trickle, but the place remained "Cherry Garden" (Kirschgarten). Even if you have only an hour in Mainz, take the time to visit this wonderful corner of the old town with half-timbered houses, decorative fountain, quiet cozy cafes and shops. It is surprisingly cosy place where you can truly immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the old Mainz: most of the buildings on the square have preserved its historical appearance.
